The Burmese Government's Persistent Refusal to Transfer Power to Civilian
rule has long been rooted from the speech given by Dictator Ne Win who said
on national TV, " If you cause disturbances next time, the army shoots
straight." A recent warning by Lt. General khin Nyunt to the democrats
inside the country including Opposition Leader Aung San Suu Kyi clearly
demonstrates the intentions of the regime for the future of Burma. A most
recent statement by the junta as to how Aung San Suu Kyi was not an elected
MP by her father's constitution also shows that Aung San Suu Kyi will never
be allowed in the elections to be held in 2 years or so.

The regime is determined to hold on to power and march to the Burmese way to
democracy acording to Lt. general Khin Nyunt's speech. The US administration
is going to renew the sanctions in May 2000. The US policy toward Burma has
been the same since the sanctions were imposed a few years ago. So is the
junta's policy toward the democratic opposition, NLD led by Aung San Suu Kyi.

The dissidents who gathered in Washington D.C last weekend passed a
resolution to follow up the campaign to campaign and urge the UN's
International Criminal Court to prosecute the responsible Burmese
authorities for the genocide and atrocities committed by the Burmese army.
The strategy to campaign to unseat the regime from the UN has been abandoned
as the idea is a bit too unrealistic. In the year 2000, if the regime does
not start prescribe lenient policies toward the opposition, some political
violence will erupt in one form or another.
