Facilitating of All Burma Federation of Student Unions (Foreign Affairs
Committee) for 79th anniversary of the National Day

1) A first time student demonstration, which was led by Burmese university
students, occurred against the colonial education system for the implementation
of the national education in 1920. This student demonstration stimulated the
Burmese people, activating not only the education system but also patriotism
under the British Colonna. Therefore, Burmese people honored this day as
'National Day'.

2) The colonial education had been a manipulative tool, manufactured
by the
colonial government in order to foster a colonial sprit in the Burmese youth.
In addition, the colonial government used this education system to conceal the
independence of Burma, as well as to destroy the national sprit of the Burmese
people. Therefore, the patriotic students tried to reconstitute a national
education by boycotting this colonial education. Supporting the students was a
patriotic band consisting of Burmese academics, city elders, businesspeople,
traders, and politicians, as well as being championed by the populace.

3) In result, the national education emerged, and the Burmese people
started calling for freedom from the British Colonna. Therefore, on this day,
people all around the country began holding yearly celebrations encouraging
Burmese national sprit.

4) Presently, the military regime has complete control of the education
within Burma, and has been actively implementing a military education in
support of their military machine, with its overwhelming bureaucracy. They are
successfully cultivating a military society by opening only military
universities, while the civilian universities must remain closed indefinitely.
Although the military regime alleges its support of the national cause, it is
still refusing to solve the unsettled national circumstances. Furthermore, it
propagates disorganized education, which represents the military dictatorship
instead of a national and independent education system within Burma.

5) We, All Burma Federation of Student Unions, thereby pledge our
continuous effort for ending the military dictatorship, abolishing the military
bureaucracy, and overcoming the brutal military power of this regime - with a
full celebration of national morality on the National day. We would also like
to appeal to all the nationalities - including monks, students, workers and
ethnic - in order to support the struggle for our national cause and
patriotism.
