(1) Senior General and Wife Arrive Back From Philippines

    Myanmar delegation led by Chairman of the State Peace
and Development Council and Prime Minister of the
Union of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw
Kyaing Kyaing and party arrived back Yangon by special
flight at 3:20  pm after  attending the Third ASEAN
Informal Summit and the Meetings of the ASEAN Heads of
State/Government  of the People's Republic of China,
Japan and the Republic of Korea held in Manila, the
Philippines, on 28 November 1999, at the invitation of
President of the Republic of the Philippines Mr.
Joseph Ejercito Estrada.

(2) Training in Supervisory Skills

    Under the agreement on business and skills
cooperation between  Myanmar and Singapore, Course on
Certificate in Supervisory Skills, jointly sponsored
by Directorate of Hotels and Tourism of the Ministry
of Hotels and Tourism, Singapore Tourism Board and
Singapore Hotel and Tourism Education Centre (SHATEC),
opened at Hotel Equatorial on 29 November. The six-day
course is being attended by 77  trainees from private
hotels and tourist agencies. 

(3) National Symposium on Reproductive Health Research

    National Symposium on Reproductive Health Research
cosponsored by Medical Research Department (Lower
Myanmar) of the Ministry of Health and World Health
Organization (WHO) was opened  at the department on 29
November. Deputy Minister for Health emphasized that
reproductive health research was conducted with the
participation of WHO since 1993. WHO has rendered
technical and financial assistance. Thus, experts of
MRD and other departments have gained skills and
experiences on reproductive health research. Seven
research projects were implemented in the first five
years. Efforts are being made to implement four more
projects. Myanmar National Committee  for Women's
Affairs is giving priority to the prevention of
violence against women and rehabilitation tasks. The
Ministry of Immigration and Population is also taking
part in the task together with the Ministry of Health.

(4) 368 Drug-Related Cases Exposed in October

    The Tatmadaw, the Myanmar Police Force and the
Customs Department exposed 368 drug-related cases in
October 1999.  The authorities seized 71.3992  kilos
of opium in  18 cases, 8.5286  kilos of heroin in 134
cases, 4.9671  kilos of opium oil in four cases,
25.443 kilos of marijuana in 54 cases, 10.48 litres of
Phensedyl in three cases, 0.4938 kilos of low-grade
opium in 20 cases, 8,572, 370 stimulant tablets in 46
cases, 462.4123 kilos of ephedrine in three cases,
5.88 litres of cough syrup in four cases, 0.115 litre
of liquid opium in one case, 26 kilos of other
chemical powder in one case, 67 cases of failure to
register and 13 other cases. Action was being taken
against 472 persons--372 men and 100 women--in 368
cases in that period.
