Thailand executes first woman in two decades

BANGKOK, Nov 24 (Reuters) - Thailand has executed its first female
prisoner in two decades, bringing the total number of death sentences it
has carried out this year to 17.

Samai Pan-intara, 59, a convicted drug trafficker, was executed by
machinegun at Bang Khwang maximum security prison on Tuesday along with
two convicted murderers, one a Myanmar national.

She was arrested with 4 kg (9 lb) of heroin in 1994.

A prison official said she was the first woman to be executed in
Thailand for 20 years.

The two men shot were Prayuth Pholpanthu, 38, convicted of killing a
hospital director and a doctor in 1993, and Myanmar national Htaho Pauy,
who killed four members of his employer's family with an axe in 1996.

Officials said there were a further 40 inmates on death row at Bang
Khwang, on the outskirts of Bangkok, the only prison in Thailand where
executions are carried out.

Thailand resumed executions in 1996 after a break of nine years.

Human rights groups have expressed concern at the rising rate of Thai
executions.
