18 Nov 1999
1. About 60 workers (40 from Champion factory and 20 from a shop nearby the
factory) were arrested at midday, and Thai police confiscated their bicycles.
2. At the market, 20 Thai police arrested 20 workers. Thai police also
force platformed stalls to move inside the houses.
3. A textile factory, owned by a Korean businessman, announces
opportunities for Thai workers because of the lack of Burmese workers.
4. Though there is a decrease in the amount of Burmese workers who hide
outside of Mae Sot, some still hide out there.
5. The Thai police who came from Bangkok are still busy searching for the
workers at their houses, shops, factories and paddy fields.
6. We think the arrests will increase more and more because the Thai
authorities are still searching and arresting Burmese workers. Therefore,
the amount of workers returning to Burma will increase.
7. Because of the following situations, some workers couldn't go back to
Burma:
(a) They have connection with the democratic forces here, and their lives
may be in danger if they'll return to Burma.
(b) They have no money to go back to Burma.
(c) They want to wait until harvest time, because they want their wages.
(d) They want to remain working here in the future - if allowed.
