1. Fourth Shwekya Thingan (Matho Thingan) weaving and donating ceremony held
at Tooth Relic Pagoda
YANGON, 21 NOV - The opening ceremony of the fourth Shwekya Thingan (Matho
Thingan) weaving and donating ceremony of the Tooth Relic Pagoda was held at
the pagoda this evening, attended by Secretary-l of the State Peace and
Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint
extended greetings.
He said this is the fourth time Shwekya Thingan weaving and donating ceremony
has been held within the precincts of the Tooth Relic Pagoda on Dhamma Pala
Hill in Mayangon Township.He then elaborated on matters related to Shwekya
Thingan.
In dealing with looms, the deputy commander said No1 Loom is donated by
Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe
and family, and USDA members will weave Shwekya Thingan at that loom and take
part in the competition. Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint and Chairman of
Yangon West District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Maung Maung Shein
formally opened the competition.
Afterwards, the panel of judges gave a signal by ringing the bell, and the
competition began.
The Secretary-1, the Secretary-3, the commander, ministers and officials
watched the competition.
Shwekya Thingan being woven as of this evening, will be offered to the Tooth
Relic Pagoda and nine Buddha images kept in Gandakuditaik of the pagoda
before the dawn of the Full-moo Day of Tazaungmon.

2. Secretary-1 attends ground-breaking ceremony for construction of new
school building in Kyauktan
YANGON, 21 Nov - A ground-breaking ceremony for construction of a new basic
education primary school building was held at the designated place in Eastern
Ward, Kyauktan, this morning, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and
Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.
At the auspicious time, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Deputy Minister for
Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung, Deputy Minister for Progress
of Border Areas and National Races U Kyaw Tin, Deputy Minister for Education
Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung and Chairman of VES Group Company Ltd Mr Vikrom Aisiri
drove stakes at the respective places.
Then, the Secretary-l and party sprinkled scented water over the stakes.
Afterwards, the Secretary-l performed the ritual of golden and silver shows
to mark the successful completion of the ceremony.
The Secretary- 1 heard reports on the architectural design of the new school
building and arrangements for construction works.
Next, the Secretary-l inspected construction of Sasana Beikmandawgyi and a
new building for Myoma Basic Education Middle School in Kyauktan.

3. Auditor-General leaves for Philippines
YANGON,21 Nov -Chairman of Myanmar Accountancy Council Auditor-General
Brig-Gen Tin Aye left here this morning to attend the 11th Conference of
ASEAN Accountants Council to be held in Davao City in the Philippines from 23
to 27 November. Brig-Gen Tin Aye was accompanied by Director-General of the
Auditor-General?s Office Daw Thin Thin, member of Myanmar Accountancy Council
U Win Thin and U Kyaw Hoe of Myanmar Accountants Association.

4. CEC member accepts USDA membership applications in Taunatha
YANGON, 21 Nov -Cornerstone laying ceremony of Aungzabu Hsutaungpyi Pagoda
was held at Sasana Pala Kyaungtaik in Monyoe Village in Taungtha Township on
20 November, attended by Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung and wife Daw
Khin Khin Yi.
Congregation received the Nine Precepts from Sayadaw U Nandavamsa of
Talaingyat Ywathit Kyaung.
Minister U Aung Thaung presented the ceremonial bricks and relics to Sayadaw
U Nandavamsa.
The minister accepted K 300,000 donated by U Htain-Daw Hla Khin, K 100,000 by
U San Nyein-Daw Waing Kyi and K 58,580 by well-wishers from Monyoe Village
and nearby villages.
USDA CEC member U Aung Thaung went to Hleguma and Htanbinkan Villages and
accepted 2,512 USDA membership applications.He presented 200 CI sheets and K
100,000 for repair of Hleguma Village Primary School and offertories to
Sayadaw U Sandima.

5. Cooperative Industrial Products Exhibition and Sales continue
YANGON, 21 Nov-Cooperative Industrial Products Exhibition and Sales continued
for the second day today at Cooperative Commercial Centre at the corner of
Saya San Road and University.Avenue in Bahan Township. Regional products and
various items were on sale. The exhibition and sales continue from 9 am to 9
pm till 26 November.
Admission is free.

6. MOB opens branch in Mandalay
YANGON, 21 NOV-The opening ceremony of a branch of Myanmar Oriental Bank was
held at the Sedona Hotel in Mandalay this morning, attended by member of the
State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and
Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint. Commander
Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Vice-Governor of Central Bank of Myanmar U Than Lwin and
Chairman of MOB U Tin Oo formally opened the branch and made speeches.
The commander and guests inspected MOB?s 12th branch which is situated on
35th Street between 81st and 82nd Streets in Mandalay. This is the second
branch of MOB in Mandalay. The first branch is situated on 84th Street.
Two more branches will be opened in the beginning of Year 2000 - one in
Yangon and another in Toungoo.

7. Matho Thingan Waving Competitions held at Shwedagon, Botataung Pagoda
YANGON, 21 NOV-The opening ceremony of the 15th Matho Thingan Weaving
Competition of the Shwedagon Pagoda sponsored by the Pagoda Board of Trustees
was held at the Shwedagon Pagoda at 5 pm today.
Present on the occasion were Chairman of the Central Committee for Organizing
Matho Thingan Weaving and Offering Ceremony member of the Pagoda Board of
Trustees U Pe Than Lay and committee members, officials of religious
associations, weaving experts and pilgrims.
U Pe Than Lay made an opening address.
Then, U Pe Than Lay formally opened the competition.
After the ceremony, various weaving teams took part in the competition.
A similar ceremony was held at the Dhammayon of Botahtaung Pagoda this
evening.

8. Myanmar tourism delegation holds talks in LPDR
YANGON, 21 Nov -At the invitation of Deputy Minister of Economic and Tourism
Services and Chairman of Lao National Tourism Authority of Lao People?s
Democratic Republic Mr Cheng Sayavong, the Myanmar delegation led by Deputy
Minister for Hotels and Tourism Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu left here by air on 16
November to attend a ceremony to mark 1999-2000 Visit Laos Year held from 18
to 23 November in Vientiane, Lao PDR.Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu
and party attended the opening ceremony of 1999-2000 Visit Laos Year on 18
November They discussed promotion of tourism services between Myanmar and
Laos.Over 300,000 tourists visited Lao PDR within the first six months of
1999.The members of the delegation arrived back here yesterday evening.

9. Winners of Sarpay Beikman Manuscripts Award announced
YANGON, 21 Nov-Winners of Sarpay Beikman Manuscripts Award for 1998 in nine
genres sponsored by the Ministry of Information were announced today.
In collected short stories, Ko Myo (Zalatmyay) won the first prize for the
book ?Anaingyu-bar?, Kayah Maung (Loikaw) the second for ?Phohtaung
kar-see-naing-byi hnint achar-wuthtuto-myar? and Yawnaka Pho Htaung the third
for ?Hsin-tha-mar?.
In drama, Hsin Min (Thameinhtaw) won the second prize for ?Anu-pyinnya ahla
pyazat-myar? and Tin Tun Oo (Culture) the third for ?Ramayana Drama?.
In sar-padetha Maung Kyaw Shin won the first prize for?Thuhnint-thu-ahla?,
Myint Thura the second for ?Pitihlwan-chein? and Maung. Maung Chit Oo
(Monywa) the third for?Myitta-phyint-pyo thaw-pan?.
In translation, Maung Wint Thu won the first prize for Swit-mi-tha-su ei
Robinson lo-ba?.
In youth literature, Maung Khaing Khant won the first prize for
?Mya-seinyaung pon-yeik-myar?,Maung Kyi Maw (Sagu) the second for
?Myitta-yananthmwe-lay-thaw hnint acharwuthtuto-myar? and Soe Tint Htoo
(Maubin) the third for ?Htee-gale-hsaung-te-nya hnint
achar-lu-nge-wuthtutomyar?.
In Myanmar culture and arts, U San won the first prize for ?Yin-kyay
-hmu-yay-yar hse-hnit-tar?, Lwin Oo the second for ?Thabawa tha-de
maung-doh-mye? and Shwegu Nan Nwe Nwe the third for ?Myanma-gita ahlaamwe?.
In general knowledge (arts), Moe Zaw Soe won the first prize for ?Cartoon
yokeshin ei phan-tee-hmu ahsinthsint?, Aung Soe Win the second for ?Myanmar
Naingngan mee-that-thamaing hnint achay-gan mee-that-pyinnya? and Aung Soe
(Veterinarian) the third for ?Myanma hin-; sar-kyat?.
In general knowledge (science and applied science), Aung Soe (Agri/107) won
the first prize for ?Than-shit-hsephyit-iar-hlyin?, Maymyo Chit Swe
(PyinOoLwin Chit Swe) the . second fer ?Myanma coffee? and Dr Aye Kyaw
(Medical Research) the third for ?Gene hnint meikset-chin?.
In collected poems, Maung Lun Myaing (Pinlebu) won the first prize for
?Pwint-thit-mya ahla Oo-yin?, Ye Yint Shan the second for ?Myit-ta-zin-ye
chit-chin kabyar-myar? and Maung Ohn Thaung (Magway) the third for
?Pan-ta-htaung-ye wut-yi-ein kabyar-myar?. There are no winners in three
remaining genres- novel, children?s literature and politics.
The prize presentation ceremony for Sarpay Beikman Manuscripts Award will be
held in Yangon on Sarsodaw Day which falls on 1st Waxing Day of Nattaw 1361
ME (8 December 1999) Winners are to contact Administration Section of Sarpay
Beikman Office, phones 283434 and 283611, as soon as possible.

10. MMA (Women?s Section) holds respects paying ceremony
YANGON, 21 NOV-Hailing the 50th Anniversary of Myanmar Medical Association,
the 17th respects paying ceremony, organized by MMA (Yangon) (Women? s
Section), was held at MMA building on Theinbyu Road in Mingala Taungnyunt
Township this morning.
Present on the occasion were 175 elder persons of age70 and above, Deputy
Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya
Thein Han, the chairman of MMA and EC members, Leading Patron of Women?s
Section Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and members of Panel of Patrons,
Director-General U Wan Maung of Health Department. officials and Myanma
doctors from the US.Chairperson of MMA (Women?s Section) Dr Yi Yi Hla
explained the purpose of the respects paying ceremony.
Then, they presented K 10,000 each to elder persons after paying respects to
them. On behalf of all elder persons, retired Professor Dr Myint Myint Khin
spoke words of thanks.

11. 34 members resign from Thayetchaung Tsp NLD
YANGON, 21 Nov-Thirty-four members resigned from National League for
Democracy of Thayetchaung Township,
Taninthayi Division.
Thirty-four members of Thayetchaung Township NLD, Taninthayi Division. of
their own volition, resigned by
sending letters of resignation to Thayetchaung Township Multiparty Democracy
General Election Commission and the
party concerned on 2 October 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in
party politics of NLD.
