(1)   Basic Education High Schools being given facilities 
        for human resources development
        
YANGON, 20 Nov-Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary- 1 of the 
State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by the 
ministers, the deputy ministers, the Chief of Staff (Air), officials of the 
State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental heads and officials, 
left here this morning by Tatmadaw aircraft and arrived in Mawlamyine at 8.10 
am.


A ceremony to open multi-media teaching centre was held at No 8 Basic 
Education High School in Mawlamyine this morning, with an address by Chairman 
of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development 
Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.


Headmistress Daw Khin Lay Paing and-Patron of the School Board of Trustees U 
Ko Ko Naing formally opened the centre. The Secretary-l then formally 
unveiled the plaque to mark the opening of multi-media teaching centre.


The Secretary-l and party inspected the photos of prize winners at the 
State-sponsored competitions, prizes for winners of all-round development, 
computer aided instruction room, computer application and E-mail section, 
printed media section, language lab, audio visual media, presentation media, 
domestic science room, painting room, educational broadcasting service 
centres and music room.

    
The Secretary-l, members of PT A, members of the School Board of Trustees, 
the headmistress, teachers and girl students had a photo taken.


A ceremony to open multimedia teaching centre was held at No 9 Basic 
Education High School today. Headmistress Daw Khin Aye Myint and Chairman of 
the School Board of Trustees U Maung Maung Aye formally opened the centre.


The Secretary-l then formally unveiled the plaque to mark the opening of 
multi-media teaching centre.


The Secretary-l and party inspected computer application and E-mail, 
computerized instruction, audiovisual media, language lab,printed media, 
educational broadcasting service centres,aesthetics art studio, domestic 
science room and art room.


The Secretary-l signed in the record book of the school.The Secretary-1 then 
formally unveiled the plaque to mark the opening of multimedia teaching 
centre.


The Secretary-1 and party inspected computer application and E-mail, computer 
aided instruction, audio visual media, listening and reading media, desk-top 
visual, presentation media, educational broadcasting service centres, school 
history, painting room, industrial room and music room.


The Secretary- 1 then signed in the record book of the school. Next, Minister 
for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin presented K 200,000 
to the commander.


The Secretary-1, members of PTA, members of the School Board of Trustees, the 
headmistress, teachers and students had photo taken.


In the afternoon, a similar ceremony was held at Shwenattaung Basic Education 
High School in Mawlamyine.Chairman of the School Board of Trustees Staff 
Officer Grade-I Lt-Col Htay Aung and School in-charge Captain Wai Lin 
formally opened the centre.


The Secretary-1 then formally unveiled the plaque to mark the opening of 
multimedia teaching centre.

Opening ceremonies of multimedia teaching centres of No 1, 8, 9 and 
Shwenanaung BEHSs were held at Yamanya Hall in Mawlamyine.Mawlamyine Township 
Education Officer U Tin Nyunt reported on efforts for opening of multimedia 
teaching centres for all-round development of the students and advantages of 
the opening of the centres.


On behalf of the School Boards of Trustees of No 1, 8, 9 and Shwenattaung 
BEHSs, Secretary of No 8 BEHS School Board of Trustees Dr Htain Win reported 
on efforts for opening of multimedia teaching centres.


In his speech, the Secretary-1 said it is encouraging to see that multimedia 
teaching centres have been opened in four basic education high schools in 
Mawlamyine, Mon State, and school children can now demonstrate their 
abilities.


These four schools have an excellent reputation; Basic Education High School 
No 1 was the first to have been opened under the British administration in 
Myanmar.


Basic Education High School No 9, Shin Maha Buddha Gawtha National School, 
has been established by patriots with the aim of promoting a sense of 
patriotism; so, the school has become famous for its instilling a sense of 
patriotism in students.


Basic Education High School (Shwenattaung), established by the Tatmadaw, is 
teaching children of the Tatmadaw members.Development of human resources, 
intellectuals and intelligentsia who arc strongly patriotic and can build the 
nation is of great significance.


In developing human resources, basic education high schools play a 
fundamental role; the intellectual power of Myanmar school children is high; 
if modern teaching aids are provided, they will become intellectuals and 
intelligentsia deeded for the country.


In conclusion, the Secretary-l urged all to cooperate in opening further 
multimedia teaching centres with a view to accomplishing the goal of a 
peaceful, modern and developed nation.

(2)   Secretary-1 donates rice and offertories to member 
       of Sangha in Mawlamyine

YANGON, 20 Nov- A ceremony to donate rice and provisions to members of the 
Sangha of monasteries in Mawlamyine was held at Thantithukha Dhammayon in 
Mawlamyine at 1 pm today, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and 
Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.


Then, Kawhla Pariyatti Sarthintaik Sayadaw Agga Maha Papdita Bhaddanta Obhasa 
administered the Five Precepts.

Members of the Sangha recited the parittas.
    
Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party presented rice and offertories to 
members of the Sangha. Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party went to 
Winsein Tawya Kyaung in Mudon. Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt paid obeisance 
to Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kesara and presented robes and alms to the Sayadaw. 
Then, the Secretary-l and party inspected construction of reclining Buddha 
image which is 600 feet long in Win Sein Tawya Kyaung.

(3)   Provisions donated to Sarthintaiks and nunneries in Bahan


YANGON, 20 Nov-Tatmadaw families (Army, Navy and Air) and well-wishers 
donated provisions to Khaymayama Nunnery and Kyauktan Nunnery at Khaymayama 
Nunnery in Bahan Township today. Secretary-2 of the State Peace and 
Development Council Chief of Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff 
(Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo attended the ceremony.


Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and party receive the Eight Precepts from Presiding 
Sayadaw of Pali Tekkatho Nyaungdon Kyaungtaiks Agga Maha Pandita Bhadd anta 
Sobhana.


Then, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and party presented offertories to Padana 
Nayak a Sayadaws. Provisions-60 bags of rice, 30 viss of edible oil, 200 viss 
of iodized salt, 20 packets of soft salt for tooth brushing, 444 bottles of 
assorted traditional medicines and K 131,000-were donated by State Peace and 
Development Council Office, Yangon City Development Committee, Yangon 
Division, Yangon West District and Bahan Township Peace and Development 
Councils and well-wishers.

Then, well-wishers presented K 2.05 million to Minister for Religious Affairs 
U Aung Khin for the construction of Thawtuzana four-storey building in 
Khaymayama Nunnery.


Director of People?s Militia and Frontier Forces Col Than Maung and Director 
General of Religious Affairs U Arnt Maung supplicated on purpose of the 
donation and religious affairs.Secretary of Yangon Division Sangha Nayaka 
Committee (Shwekyin) Sayadaw Bhaddanta Dhammasamibhivamsa administered the 
Five Precepts.


Minister U Aung Khin and party presented offertories to the Padana Nayaka 
Sayadaws. Deputy Adjutant-General Col Ye Tun, Chief of Staff (Navy) Commodore 
Kyi Min and Staff Officer Grade-I (Air) Lt-Col Ohn Maung Maung presented rice 
donated by Tatmadaw families to Padana Nayaka Sayadaw Bhaddanta 
Dhammasamibhivamsa


Well-wishers presented 40 bags of rice, 10 viss of edible oil, 150 viss of 
iodized salt, 15 packets of soft salt for tooth brushing and 324 bottles of 
assorted traditional medicines to Padana Nayaka Sayadawgyi.

(4)   Cooperative Industrial Products Exhibition and Sales open 

YANGON, 20 Nov-Cooperative Industrial Products Exhibition and Sales sponsored 
by Cooperative Department opened at Cooperative Commercial Centre at the 
corner of Saya San Road and University Avenue in Bahan Township, this 
morning, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council 
Lt-Gen Tin Oo.Minister U Aung San, Secretary of Bahan Township Union 
Solidarity and Development Association U Shein Myint and Chairman of Pahtama 
Hteiktan Producers? Cooperative Society U Inya formally opened the exhibition 
and sales.


The Secretary-2 and party inspected the displays at the exhibition. 
Altogether 110 cooperative societies from states and divisions and private 
entrepreneurs will sell household and personal goods. Entertainment 
programmes will be staged. The exhibition and sales open from 9 am to 9 pm 
till 26 November. Admission is free.

(5)   Myanmar agricultural delegation arrives back


YANGON, 20 Nov-The 30th Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organization 
was held at its headquarters in Rome, Italy, from 12 to 23 November, and 
agriculture ministers from 186 FAO member nations including Myanmar attended 
the conference.The conference was opened on 12 November, and Mr Benalia 
Belhouadjeb of Algeria was elected as chairman. Ex-Secretary-General of the 
UN Mr Boutros Boutrcs Ghali delivered a Mc Dougall commemorative address.


On 13 November, Director-General of FAO Dr Jack Du was re-elected for the 
second term.


On 17 November, leader of Myanmar delegation Minister for Agriculture and 
Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin delivered a speech on agricultural and food 
conditions of Myanmar.

Myanmar delegation arrived back here on 19 November evening by air.

(6)   Diplomats and media persons study Wa Region Alternative
       Development Programme in Shan State ( East)

YANGON, 20 Nov -The 35-member study group comprising diplomats, officials of 
UN Agencies and media persons led by Director-General of Department for 
Development of Border Areas and National Races Col Wunna Maung Lwin and 
Director of Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control Office (International 
Relations) Police Col Khan Aung left here by Tatmadaw aircraft yesterday 
morning for Kengtung to study in Wa Region Alternative Development Programme 
in Shan State (East) being jointly implemented by CCDAC and UNDCP. They were 
welcomed at Kengtung Airport by Deputy Commander of Triangle Region Command 
Brig-Gen Myint Swe and departmental officials.


They went to Myaymaingpauk in Wa Special Region 2 by Tatmadaw aircraft. They 
were welcomed by national race leader U Pauk Yu Chan of Wa Special Region No 
2, regional authorities and officials of Wa Alternative Development Programme 
Region.


At the Office of Wa region Alternative Development Programme, Planning 
Adviser Mr John Deltom explained progress of work and the work to be done.


The study tour delegation was divided into three groups, which went to Hada 
Village by helicopter and Pansan Village and Pauknoinu village by car.Leaders 
of Villages and officials of the programme re ported on arrangements for the 
development of villages.Then, members of delegation inspected health, 
education, water supply for the villages, cultivation of annual and perennial 
crops, tea and buck-wheat in the region.


In the evening, U Pauk Yu Chan and officials replied to the question.The 
group includes Assistant Resident Representative of UNDCP, Ambassadors of 
Australia, United Kingdom, France, Japan, Italy and Russian Federation, 
counselors of United States, People?s Republic of China, Canada Embassies, 
officials of UNDP, UNICEF, ICRC, journalists of Asahi Shimbun, Reuters, AP, 
Asahi TV and Star Line Shimbun and departmental officials.They arrived back 
here in the evening.

(7)   Winners of National Literary Awards announced

YANGON, 20 Nov-The National Literary Award Scrutiny and Selection Committee 
of Ministry of Information today announced winners of the Nationa1 Literary 
Awards for 1998 in nine genres.

The winners are Nandar Soe (Hsinbyukyun) in novel genre for?Chaung-yay-yin 
hlyan-par-loh lan-ma-thi-bar-byi?, Nay Myo Thant in collected short stories 
for ?Kha-yaung-lan-hnint pan-dwe-ka hmway?, Myinmu Maung Naing Moe in 
collected poems for ?Kha-yaung-lan hnint pan-tha-bye ka-byamyar?, U Thet Tun 
in belles-lettres for ?Kin-wun che-yar laik-yway-thar?, U Aye Cho (MA) in 
Myanmar culture and arts for ?Sule Pagoda?, Su Myat Ko in youth literature 
for ?Myanrnar-pyi-ka 
na-zwe-lay?, Kyaw Aung in translation (general knowledge) for ?Nay-win 
ba-yin-myar?, U Aung Myint in general knowledge (arts) for ?Kaung-kin datpon

There are no winners in five remaining genres-drarna, children?s literature, 
translation (aesthetics), general knowledge (science) and politics.The prize 
presentation ceremony for National Literary Award will be held in Yangon on 
Sarsodaw Day which falls on Ist Waxing Day of Nattaw 1361 ME (8 December

(8)   Management (Multiplier) Course No 11 for Executives of 
       Thakayta Township USDA concludes

YANGON, 20 Nov-Management (Multiplier) Course No 11 for Executives of 
Thakayta Township Union Solidarity and Development Association of Yangon East 
District concluded this morning with an address by member of the Central 
Executive Committee of USDA U Saw Tun.


In his speech, U Saw Tun said the association is promoting the interests of 
national politics, and also discharging political, economic and social duties.

USDA members are nationalists who are striving for non-disintegration of the 
Union, non-disintegration of national solidarity and perpetuation of 
sovereignty.He urged all to carry out national duties with a sense of 
patriotism and Union spirit. Then, prizes were presented to outstanding 
trainees.

(9)  99 members resign from Letpadan Township NLD

YANGON, 20 Nov-Ninety-nine members resigned from National League for 
Democracy of Letpadan Township, Bago Division. Ninety-nine members of 
Letpadan Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own volition, resigned by 
sending letters of resignation to Letpadan Township Multiparty Democracy 
General Election Commission and the party concerned on 18 September 1999 as 
they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
