(1) Basic Education High Schools Being Given
Facilities for Human Resources Development

    Opening ceremonies of multimedia teaching centres of
No 1, 8, 9 and Shwenattaung BEHSs were held at Yamanya
Hall in Mawlamyine. There are 54 high schools in Mon
State, and 15 high schools in Mawlamyine Township, out
of 12 high schools which have been installed with
multimedia teaching centres in Mawlamyine, multimedia
teaching centres of only four high schools have been
opened due to available short time frame. The
Government has laid down education promotion
programmes, and in the first phase, emphasis is being
given to inculcating students with a sense of
patriotism, Union spirit and preserving national
culture; and success has been achieved to some extent.
In the second phase convered by the education
promotion programmes, efforts are being made to reach
an international level of education by setting up
computer-aided teaching and learning classrooms with
the use of information technology which is flourishing
in the world today. It is found that due to active
participation of school boards of trustees including
the people, multimedia teaching centres have been
improving all over the country; success has been
achieved more than expected. 

(2) Cooperative Industrial Products Exhibition and
Sales Open

    Cooperative Industrial Products Exhibition and Sales
sponsored by Cooperative Department opened at
Cooperative Commercial Centre in Bahan Township on 20
November. Altogether 110 cooperative societies from
states and divisions and private entrepreneurs will
sell household and personal goods. Entertainment
programmes will be staged. The exhibition and sales
open from 9 am to 9 pm till 26 November. Admission is
free. 

(3) Myanmar Agricultural Delegation Arrives Back

    The 30th Conference of the Food and Agriculture
Organization was held at its headquarters in Rome,
Italy, from 12 to 23 November, and agriculture
ministers from 186 FAO member nations including
Myanmar attended the conference. The conference was
opened on 12 November, and Mr. Benalia Belhouadjed of
Algeria was elected as chairman. Ex-Secretary-General
of the UN Mr. Boutros Boutros Ghali delivered a Mc
Dougall commemorative address. On 13 November,
Director-General of FAO Dr. Jack Du was re-elected for
the second term. On 17 November, leader of Myanmar
delegation, Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation
delivered a speech on agricultural and food conditions
of Myanmar. His speech covered efforts for development
of agriculture as a base and all-round development in
Myanmar, cultivation and good harvests of rice, pulses
and beans and crops, implementation of 102 dam
projects with the use of internal investment and
technological know-how, a decrease in extending
international monetary assistance for production of
food throughout the world and using that kind of
assistance as a weapon, importance of efforts for
elimination of hunger and international monetary
assistance. In the afternoon, Minister together with
Myanmar Ambassador to Italy met with Dr. Jack Du, and
discussed matters related to six technical cooperation
programmes. Dr.Jack Du also spoke of technical
exchange and cooperation for the development of the
agriculture sector and construction of dams. Myanmar
delegation arrived back Yangon on 19 November evening
by air.

(4) Diplomats and Media Persons Study Wa Region
Alternative Development Programme in Shan State (East)

    The 35-member study group comprising diplomats,
officials of UN Agencies and media persons led by
Director-General of Department for Development of
Border Areas and National Races and Director of
Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control (CCDAC)
Office (International Relations) left Yangon by
aircraft on 19 November for Kengtung to study in Wa
Region Alternative Development Programme in Shan State
(East) being jointly implemented by CCDAC and UNDCP.
They went to Myaymaingpauk in Wa Special Region 2 by
aircraft. At the Office of Wa Region Alternative
Development Programme, Planning Adviser Mr. John
Deltom explained progress of work and the work to be
done. The study tour delegation was divided into three
groups, which went to Hada Village by helicopter and
Pansan Village and Pauknoinu village by car. Leaders
of Villages and officials of the programme reported on
arrangements for the development of villages. Then,
members of delegation inspected health, education,
water supply for the villages, cultivation of annual
and perennial crops, tea and buck-wheat in the region.
In the evening, Wa national leader U Pauk Yu Chan and
officials replied to the questions. The group includes
Assistant Resident Representative of UNDCP,
ambassadors of Australia, United Kingdom, France,
Japan, Italy and Russian Federation, counsellors of
United States, People's Republic of China and Canada
Embassies, officials of UNDP, UNICEF, ICRC,
journalists of Asahi Shimbun, Reuters, AP, Asahi TV
and Sankei Shimbun and departmental officials. They
arrived back Yangon in the evening.
