(1) ITBMU Holds First Ceremony to Confer Diploma in Buddha Dhamma
The first ceremony for conferring the Diploma in Buddha Dhamma (Dip.B.Dh)
by International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University(ITBMU) of the
Ministry of Religious Affairs was held in Maha Pasana Cave, Kaba Aye Pagoda
in Yangon on 12 November. At the commencement of this university, forty-three
students from foreign countries and fifty-two students in Myanmar--altogether
ninety-five students attended the classes of Buddha Dhamma Diploma Course,
but after the first semester seven foreign students and one local student,
due to their social, economical and medical difficulties, were not able to
continue their second semester. Therefore, altogether eighty seven students
could cover the Diploma Course. Rector Sayadaw (Priest) of ITBMU conferred
the certificates of Buddha Dhamma Diploma on the students who passed the
examination for academic year 1998-1999 of ITBMU, and delivered an Ovadakatha
(address)to the graduate students.
(2) Secretary-2 Meets President of CITIC Technology Co of China
Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo met
President Mr. Sun Xiaowen of CITIC Technology Co Ltd and party of the
People's Republic of China, currently in Yangon to conduct matters relating
to Mone and Thaphanseik Hydel Power Projects being implemented by the
Ministry of Electric Power, as they called at the hall of the Ministry of
Finance and Revenue at 3 pm on 12 November.
(3) President of SEAMEC Concludes Visit
President of Education Ministers Council of South-East Asia (SEAMEC) and
Minister of Education of Singapore Rear Admiral Teo Chee Hean and party left
Yangon for Singapore by air on 12 November.
(4) Minister Meets Experts of MITI (JODC) of Japan
Under the arrangement of bilateral cooperation in Y2K Affairs between
Myanmar National Supervisory Committee on Y2K Work Programme and MITI
(Ministry of International Trade and Industry) of Japan, Chairman of National
Supervisory Committee on Y2K Work Programme, Minister for Communications,
Posts and Telegraphs met experts on Y2K Affairs led by Mr. Fumio Owaki of
MITI (JODC) who called at his office on 12 November. They discussed
assistance for Y2K problem sector-wise. The Y2K experts team will stay in
Myanmar about two weeks and carry out Y2K affairs in cooperation with Myanmar
National Supervisory Committee on Y2K Work Problem.
(5) Technical Workshops on Development of Myanmar Women Opened
The opening ceremony of Technical Workshop on Development of Myanmar
Women sponsored by education group of the Myanmar National Working Committee
for Women's Affairs was held at the meeting hall of Medical Research
Department on Ziwaka Street in Dagon Township on 12 November. The workshop
will be held from 12 to 14 November.
Similarly, the Workshop on Health and Development of Women in Bago,
jointly organized by Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs
and the World Health Organization, was held in Thiri Oktha Hall, Bago, on 11
and 12 November.
(6) Two Fire Engines Donated to Fire Services Department
A ceremony to present two fire engines donated by Mr. Takesauro Mashimo
of Tochiji and Dr. MD Tasukuiida of Rukasaki of Japan was held at the meeting
hall of Fire Services Department(FSD) on 12 November. Mr. Takesauro Mashimo
explained the purpose of the donations. Director-General of FSD spoke words
of thanks and presented certificates of honour to the well-wishers.
More Members of the National League for Democracy Return Home After
Successful Meetings
The Government is pleased to mention that since September 1998 there has
been an involvement in the process of exchanging views with a number of NLD
members who are staying at various Government Guest Houses upon the
Government's invitation. After a successful exchange of views in building a
stable and multiparty democracy and in preserving the prevailing status of
being one of the most peaceful and stable countries in the world, (6) NLD
members returned home in the past few months.
The Government is still in the process of its continuing of exchange of
views with the remaining (49) members on the week-days after their return to
the guest houses from their regular week-ends and holiday home-visits. The
Government is also pleased to have been able to facilitate the arrangements
from time to time for the International Committee for Red Cross (ICRC)
members in paying visits and meeting with the NLD members at the Guest
Houses.
