Rebuttal of SNLD's Joint General Secretary
SSA not Narco-Army but Freedom Fighters

In a letter addressed to SHAN -EU with Ccs to various newspapers, Sai =
Aung Mart, Shan Nationalities League for Democracy's (SNLD) Joint =
General Secretary and a CEC member who defected to Shan State Army =
(SSA), said that the SSA was not a narco-army but a set up made up of =
freedom fighters.

The SSA headed by Sao Yawdserk was born out of the people's will to =
serve the people, he said. SSA, formely known as Shan United =
Revolutionary army (SURA), is striving to achieve "unity, Panglong =
spirit, people's welfare, eradication of narcotics and peace".

He said the SNLD, which was the second largest party elected in 1990 =
nation-wide election, has never been allowed the freedom of activities. =
The National Convention in 1993, which laid down 104 guidelines for the =
drafting of the future Union Constitution, was in effect, used to =
curtail democratic procedures, human rights and status of equality for =
all the non-Burmans. It was never aimed at achieving a genuine federal =
union, he said. The National Covention was being used to keep the SPDC =
further in power and it has neither the wish nor ability to solve the =
existing ethnic conflicts through political means. The tripartite =
dailogue endorsed by the United Nations was also of no interest for the =
SPDC, he stressed.

As all media outlets were under total control of the SPDC, Sai Aung Mart =
said that the information given by Myanmar Information Committee on 7th =
November concerning SSA, was nothing more than a propaganda to serve its =
own purpose.
