Myanmar's NLD Loses court battle

Yangon (AFP-Jiji)--The Myanmar Supreme Court has rejected =
allegations that junta leaders illgally harassed and intimidated member =
of Aung San Suu Kyi's opposition National League for Democracy (NLD).
The NLD had filed complaints against 29 government officials including =
powerful first secretary and military intelligence head Gen.Khin Nyunt =
and Home Minister Col.Tin Hlaing.
But the Myanmar Supreme Court said in its ruling Saturday that no =
evidence had been found to support the allegations and all =
investigations had been dropped.
Observers said the ruling was largely a formality as the military, which =
has ruled Myanmar in various guises for decades, tightly controls the =
legal system.
In the brief statement, the NLD said it would continue to pursue the =
matter from "within legal bounds."=20
The NLD has been locked in a bitter struggle with the junta since the =
winning an overwhelming victory in 1990 elections, which was ignored by =
the military.
State-run media has been carrying daily reports of mass defections from =
the NLD, proof the says of coercion by the military intelligence.
Diplomats say the government has been engaged in a concerted campaign to =
crush the party's ability to organize and to isolate its leaders in =
Yangon.
Myanmar's electoral commission say only 92 of the 392 NLD candidates =
elected in 1990 were still party members.
It said 105 had "resigned of their own volition," 30 had died, 139 were =
disqualified or had their candidacy revoked, while 27 defected to become =
 independents.
Diplomats say public support for Suu Kyi is as strong as ever, even =
though people are prevented from publicly articulating their political =
aspirations.
