1029-01 Int'l Symposium On IT Technology
**An International Symposium on IT Technology begins in Yangon on 27th
October. Delegates from Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan,
Thailand and Myanmar will attend the symposium.

It is the first international gathering on IT technology ever to be staged
in Yangon. This is co-sponsored by a Japanese computer agency, the Center
of International Co-operation for Computerization, Ministry of Trade and
Industry of Japan and Myanmar's Computer Federation.

Myanmar has witnessed the rapid development in IT technology during these
years. A vivid testimony to this is the Myanmar government and business
community's efforts in combating the Y2K computer problem.

1029-02 New Cement Factory To Produce 400 Tons/Day
**Myanmar Ministry of Science and Technology has completed the construction
of a new cement plant near Taunggyi City, about 450-km north east of
Yangon. The new cement factory is capable of producing over 20 tons per day.

As this developed, a new cement factory is underway in central Myanmar.
This one is capable of producing 400 tons of cement per day. A Panamanian
company has also completed the building of a new cement factory in Yangon's
Thilawa Industrial Zone, which is expected to start its cement production
soon.

1029-03 Fruit And Flower Show In Yangon Soon
**Yangon municipal authorities are set to stage a Fruit and Flower Show in
Yangon.

The show will be held from January 1 to 15, 2000 as part of the
celebrations for the Myanmar Independence Day on 4th January.

1029-04 Myanmar To Attend ASEAN Ministerial Meet
**Agriculture Ministry's Deputy Minister leaves Yangon for Brunei on 27th
October to attend the ASEAN ministerial meeting. The Agriculture and
Forestry Ministers of the 10 ASEAN nations are to meet in Brunei on 28 and
29 of this month.

Myanmar is one of largest exporter of teak and hard wood in the region.
Myanmar cuts over 3.48 cubic meters of teak and hard wood annually.

Myanmar's agricultural sector is co-operating more with its ASEAN partner
nations. Recently, Myanmar acquired high yield paddy and maize species from
Thailand. Myanmar and Laos also signed an agreement last month for giving
Myanmar's assistance for Laotian agricultural sector.

1029-05 Indian Paddy Species Yield High
**Myanmar farmers this year grew varieties of foreign paddy species
nationwide. As the paddy harvest season sets in, per acre yield of those
species are now available.

On 26 October, farmers who grow Indian paddy species "Cima" in Yangon
province, harvested their crops and got a per acre yield of nearly 110
bushels.

Usually the highest per acre yield of most of the Myanmar paddy species is
80 bushels. Other imported paddy species grown this year are from China and
Thailand, which are also expected to give high-yield for Myanmar farmers.

1029-06 Myanmar Statistics
**Every Friday Myabuzz will feature figures related to investment & trade.

1. A total 63% of the Myanmar working force is engaged in agriculture work
for food production. The food-producing sector contributes 36% to the
national GDP (Gross Per Domestic Product).

2. During the first half of this year Myanmar had spent over Kyats 3.65
million (US$ 21,145) for the relief works from natural disasters.

3. As Myanmar agricultural sector grows with the double and triple
cropping, Myanmar farmers' need for water is also growing proportionately.
Myanmar is now capable of irrigating over 1.64 million acres of cultivated
lands through 102 dams and 218-river water pumping stations. Last week a
new dam capable of storing water up to 17,500 acre-feet was inaugurated.
The dam was constructed at the cost of Kyats 140 million (US$ 0.43 million)
