Thailand to ease controls on foreign labour

BANGKOK, Oct 21 (Reuters) - Thailand will double its quota for foreign
labour employment to 162,000 from
November to ease a shortage in various labour-intensive industries,
Deputy Prime Minister Korn Dabbaransi said
on Thursday.

``A labour shortage problem is seriously threatening the competitiveness
of some industries as they can hardly
find enough local people for low-skilled work,'' Korn told reporters.

Most foreign labour in Thailand comes from neighbouring Myanmar, Laos
and Cambodia. Foreign workers are mainly employed by the fishing
industry, rice mills and poultry farms.
