Australian Aid to Burma 1998 / 99

This is a very brief summary of Australia's aid budget to Burma as promised
some time ago. Please accept apologies for the delay. You will have to
reformat the scale of Aid Flows.

Total aid flows to Burma by sector: ($3,360,000 Australian)
Refugee: 61% Education: 15% Health 12% NGO: 10% Other: 2%
Education: 15% is the continuing funding for 21 exiled students selected
from the refugee camps within Thailand who are currently studying in
Australia and ongoing part funding for a Distance Education Program on the
Thailand Burma Border.
Health: 12% for 4 Australian NGOs under Burma Community Health Program
addressing Primary Health Care, Maternal and Child Health and helping
prevent the spread of HIV / AIDS in Burma.
NGO: 10% Anticipated, not agreed, estimated $240,000 Australian volunteers
(6 - 8 people to work in Burma.
Refugee and Emergency Relief: 63%. $2,011,000 to resettle Rohingyan
Refugees, $50,000 emergency relief and $1,200,000 for relief activities in
refugee camps on the Thailand Burma border.
Other: 2% $80,000.00 for small humanitarian programs which directly aid the
people of Burma.
Major projects of Australian NGOs in Burma, receiving the above allocation.
CARE, Australia: Kale Health Outreach Program. (Kale is an isolated
township. Funds will support the local Wesley Clinic, train of 14 locally
engaged and clean up water and sanitation services.
World Vision, Australia: HIV education and training for educating. To
increase the understanding and acceptance of people living with Aids. Jan
99 to Dec. 2001, $312,000.00.
Action Research Program in Dawei and Myeik.
World Vision Australia: HIV Eastern Shan State. As above $307, 170.
