British police keep watch for Nazi stimulant

LONDON, Oct 17 (Reuters) - British police are keeping their eyes open
for a hallucinogenic stimulant being produced in Southeast Asia and
originally developed by Nazi chemists to keep troops awake, the Observer
newspaper said on Sunday.

``We are watching this with extreme concern,'' a detective told the
paper about the drug known as ``yaba.''

Two packages of what was believed to be ``yaba'' were intercepted at
London's Heathrow airport last month, it said, adding that there had
been similar seizures in France and Ireland.

Word of the amphetamine derivative has spread from British tourists
returning from Southeast Asia and the recipe was available on the
Internet, the paper said.

The drug -- whose ingredients include salt, household cleaning products,
distilled cold medicines and lithium from camera batteries -- could soon
rival Ecstasy as the drug of choice in British dance clubs, the paper
said.

``You can make it right on the hob (stove top) with just a couple of
casserole dishes,'' it quoted a drugs squad detective as saying.

``As well as being quicker and cheaper, the drug produced is also purer
and stronger than other forms of amphetamine.''

The Observer said ``yaba'' producers were operating out of the Golden
Triangle region where the borders of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos meet --
an area more widely known for heroin and its precursor, opium.

The Nazi method of producing ``yaba'' was picked up in Thailand more
than three decades ago and was legally sold until it was criminalised in
1970, pushing the makers and suppliers underground, the paper said.
