The Killing of a Muslim .... and more news

15 October 1999

No: 10 - 15

Killing of a Muslim Brought Action Even Against SPDC Soldier

On 22 June, Zaw Lin, a driver from Hsipaw, together Zaw Min, his =
assistant, were stopped at Hsawngkae, Hsipaw Township, on their way back =
from Hsengkeo, where they unloaded government cargo from their truck.

The sergeant (name unidentified) and two privates (names also =
unidentified) were reported to have beaten up the two for failing to =
report to them on their way to Hsengkeo. The driver was hit on the head =
with a piece of wood.

On their way back to Hsipaw, they stopped over at the village of =
Gawnglarng, where Zaw Lin complained of dizziness and died soon =
afterwards.

A formal complaint was submitted to the higher authorities in Rangoon by =
the Muslim League resulting in the imprisonment for the culprits.

"Maybe it's better to be a Muslim", said the Shans of Hsawngkae. "Had it =
been a Shan killed instead, the case would have gotten nowhere".

Junta Indoctrinates Soldiers To Combat Truths

Since the reactivation of organizing committees in the Armed Services =
since August, weekly meetings are being held where soldiers and their =
spouses have to attend.

"The attendees", reported DIN, "are told it is not true there is no =
democracy in Burma, that there are human rights violations and that the =
government is waging the War on Drugs half-heartedly. The SPDC also pays =
attention to keep the commodity prices steady".

To which one opposition politician comments: "How they will manage to =
cover up everything that happens right under the eyes of these soldiers =
and their families is really beyond me".

Big "Than Shwe" Isn't That Innocent

On his way to Maymyo, renamed Pyin Oo Lwin by the Junta, from Mandalay, =
Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development =
Council and Supreme Commander of the Armed Services, noticed on his way =
huge puffs of black smoke coming out of the smokestacks of the 3A Cement =
Factory.

Not surprisingly, an order was out at once to shut down the factory. And =
not surprisingly, the owner of the factory, Aik Tun, who also happened =
to be Asia Wealth Bank's chairman, managed to put it back into =
operation.

It was reported by informed sources that he presented the good general =
with K. 1.2 million and a huge share in the firm.

No sooner had he opened the factory than imports of foreign product =
ceased. Of course, the demand for the 3A brand is such that the price of =
one bag rises twofold from a mere K. 600 to K. 1,300 in no time.

The Amazing Pasture Development Project

In order to improve the quality of pasture for cattle breeding, the SPDC =
ordered a shipment of foreign grass, known by the locals simply as =
Japanese grass, imported.

At first, the people were quite happy, because the grass spread out =
quite rapidly and it was suitable for grazing.

However, as time went by, the grass began to upset people by making them =
itchy and cutting their skins with its sharp edges.

"Worse still, during the dry season when forest fires are apt to occur, =
the Japanese grass rather helps the fire to destroy the forests so =
quickly", complained a local farmer in Shan State.
