Paribatra has agreed to a police request for him to give his account of
his part in ending the hostage drama during the Burmese embassy siege on
Oct 1-2, according to an assistant metropolitan police chief.
Pol Maj-Gen Chakthip Kunchorn na Ayutthaya said police will seek to
interview the deputy foreign minister this week. However, the exact date
is not yet known pending further co-ordination.
M.R. Sukhumbhand, who offered himself as a hostage, flew in a helicopter
which took the five Burmese dissidents who seized the embassy to the
Thai-Burmese border in Ratchaburi province on Oct 2.
The helicopter's pilot and flight mechanic will also be asked to testify,
Pol Maj-Gen Chakthip said.
Police have questioned Thai and Burmese hostages and will try to get as
many as possible other foreign hostages to testify.
The officer believed the five Burmese dissidents were still hiding along
the Thai-Burmese border, adding they would be arrested once they were
back on Thai soil.
Southern inshore fishermen
plan to petition His Majesty the King for a ban on the use of spotlights
and fine-mesh nets in nocturnal anchovy fishing by commercial vessels.
And if a study on the impact of nocturnal fishing to be released on Nov 1
favours deep-sea trawlers using lights and destructive fishing gear, the
fishermen will set fire to their vessels.
Thawee Theppana, a leading member of the Confederation of Southern
Inshore Fishermen, accused the government of failing to take the
initiative on the issue and criticised the sub-committee studying the
matter for ignoring the socio-economic impact.
If the study's outcome proves unsatisfactory, all fishermen will join
forces with their allies and anchovy consumers to stage further rallies,
Mr Thawee said.
A solution has not been forthcoming because certain politicians in the
government were supporting commercial trawler operators, Mr Thawee
said.
