Dear Sir/Madam,

I was seriously shocked about the selection of news in the 17 o' clock
news. You reported about the pity elephant Motala which stepped on a
land mine in Thailand.
According to my information Motala never stepped on a land mine IN
THAILAND but in Burma, where land mines are used to kill the own
population in a civil war, which endures now since 52 years. In Burma,
if an animal steps on a land mine it can result, that the owner of this
animal needs to pay up to 8000 Kyats (ca. 45 DM - a 1/2 year income of
an ordinary farmer) further he needs to give away the wounded or dead
animal as food for the Burmese army (Source: SSA News, 25th September
1999).
Further, SAT1 reported proudly about a collection of donations of around
200,000 DM. If SAT1 - or any other of the German media giants - would
only one time report about the background of Motalas incident, it would
reveal that there are several thousands refugees for whom nobody cares
and nobody calls for donations, especially because the German media may
decided not to make it public. It is not the first time, that a renowned
news agency put the place of an incident to Thailand instead of Burma to
avoid to go deeper in the details.

Motala was a victim of the same thing which endangers 50 million people
in Burma, but SAT1 just report about animals with disregarding the human
beings.
I'm very ashamed!
