Myanmar notes end of hostage drama, NLD distances self

YANGON, Oct. 2 (Kyodo) - The Myanmar junta confirmed Saturday the end of a
hostage drama at its embassy in Bangkok, saying the ''world community would
not tolerate terrorist actions.''

''Although the incident is over, it is important to make these criminals
realize that no matter under what pretext or disguise it might have been
staged, peace loving people of the world will not tolerate criminal
terrorist actions they have committed,'' an official statement said.

Armed men who described themselves as exiled Myanmar students, took over the
Bangkok embassy on Friday, but released all hostages before being flown to
the Thai-Myanmar border area Saturday.

They said the hostage-taking underlined the repression of the military
regime in Myanmar.

Also in Yangon, the National League for Democracy, led by Nobel laureate
Aung San Suu Kyi, dissociated itself from the Bangkok incident.

''Such acts are contrary to the principles of the party,'' the NLD said in a
press release Saturday.

''The committee representing the people's parliament was greatly

disturbed to learn of the seizure of the Burmese (Myanmar) Embassy in
Bangkok and taking of hostages by armed men. While the (committee)
understands the aspirations and frustrations of students and other democracy
activists who have been forced to leave Burma (Myanmar) by the repressive
measures of the military regime, we categorically condemn seizure of the
embassy and the taking of hostages,'' the release said.

The NLD statement also expressed appreciation of the Thai government
decision to reject the use of force in ending the incident.
