Thai government's recent attitude towards Burmese Student's Refugees
such
as urging the UNHCR to speed up it's process for the Burmese refuge
seekers
is highly appreciated and welcomed.

It is a positive out come emerged from the embassy seizure few weeks
ago.
In the past, Thai government does not exercise its utmost authority
to
encourage the UNHCR to help Burmese refugee seekers in Bangkok and also
in
the camps. Most of the aids given by UNHCR were slow down or delayed
and
carried out by the Thai authorities.

UNHCR could not have access directly to the Burmese refugees. So
called
safe camp in Ratchaburi province has been closed for new comers who
are
approved as refugees by UNHCR. Even though, they got a pass to
resettle in
the USA, Canada and Australia, the Thai authorities denied them to stay
in
the camp. On the other hand, the Thai policy is: first, all
Burmese
refugees who are recognized by the UNHCR and approved to resettle in
third
countries have to enter the safe camps before they depart to the
host
country. Unfortunately, Thai authorities has blocked their entry to
the
camp. It makes the students very frustrated and angry because they
are
bearing tremendous hope to enter the camp and resettle in the third
countries as soon as possible for further studies. They want to
study in
their host countries as free man but the Thais two edges policy denies
them
to resettle in the third countries. In Burmese saying goes "There is
giving
but no one received it".

UNHCR need to find persons who really understand the Burmese problems
and
have kindhearted. The UNHCR rejected many true activists but many
fake
activists were approved. It is ironic that some opportunists who
came to
Bangkok by air were granted as refugees and true activists from the
borders
were denied or marked as border case. Border case means they have
to
return back to the border where they belong. We urge UNHCR to
review its
attitude and speed up their process for the Burmese Refugees.

In the safe camp the medical treatment is inadequate and food is not
good.
We would like to request the Thai authorities to allow the UNHCR
direct
access to the refugees in the safe camps and allow the newly
approved
refugees to stay in the camps as soon as possible.

Civil Society for Burma is willing to help, sponsor the Burmese
refugees
who cases have been approved by the INS from US embassy in
Bangkok. We
are also eager to help to those who were former members of students'
and
ethnic activist groups from Burma, rejected by UNHCR or foreign
embassies.
