Among the ASEAN nations, mainly Singapore and Thailand have sizable

0930-06 Ministry News
**Every Thursday, Myabuzz will be putting in Ministry News. This will
tackle the issues in the preceding week (with emphasis on business and
investment news) in the various ministries in the country.
1. The Ministry of Industry 1 is operating a marble factory in Madaya, a
town north of upper Myanmar capital Mandalay. Minister for Industry 1,
during his tour to the Madaya Marble factory, on 20th September urged for
increase in production of marble-made personal goods for export. The town
of Madaya is popular for their marble deposits.
2. Ministry of Finance & Revenue announced the interest rate cuts on loan
last week. The bank amended the rate from 17% to 15% on long and
intermediate term loans starting from 1st October.
3. World Health Organization (WHO) and Myanmar's Ministry of Health
sponsored a short training for the Myanmar traditional medicine
manufacturers in Yangon on the 20th September. Myanmar is producing
traditional medicine on commercial scale for years -some even get fame in
the international market. These medicines have excellent prospect for
large-scale export in future.
4. German Small Industrialist Association sponsored a planning workshop on
business information in Yangon during past week.
5. In Myanmar's southern coastal region, over 12,000 fishing trawlers are
operating for offshore and deep-sea fishing. As a related business to
fisheries, more cold storage factories are being set up. National and
foreign companies own several cold-storage factories in the region, which
resulted in annual earnings of over US$ 20 million for this southern
coastal region alone.

ASEAN Investment Regional Council meeting will also be held in Singapore on
29th September. The Myanma Investment Commission will be attending the
meeting.

After becoming a member state of ASEAN, in mid-1997, Myanmar asserted
itself for the greater economic cooperation with the region. Among the
ASEAN nations, mainly Singapore and Thailand have sizable investment in
