The Burmese Army Still Building-Up for Operation Against Shans

Sources who escaped the junta's forced requisition of their motor vehicles
told S.H.A.N the Burmese Army was still in preparation for the campaign
against the Shan States Army.

"Their staging area centers around Poongpakhem ( 7 Km from BP-1 ) and
Nakawngrner (14 Km from BP-1)" said one source. One source estimated the
combined strength at 1,500.
Both villages are in Mongton Township, Mongsart District, Eastern Shan
State, better known as the Triangle Command Area.

"We were told that they wanted to clear the area around Loihtway(Doitway in
Thai) of the Shan rebels," said another source.

The SSA's latest issue of SSArmy News reported 3 clashes on 29 August when
a well known officer, a graduate of the Defense Services Academy, Burma's
West Point, was killed.

As Loihtway, the junta's mountain bastion, is right across the village of
Muangna, Chiangdao District, Chiangmai Province of Thailand, villagers
expressed concern of possible spillover. "They had already abducted 4 of
our villagers once, " said the source from the village. "They might do that
again. The next time, it might be even worse, like burning our village and
robbing us, just as they have been doing in Tak and Maehongson."
