Burmese Thidingyut Festival in Toky

Subject: Burmese Thidingyut Festival in Tokyo

BURMESE THIDINGYUT FESTIVAL

The end of the Buddhist Lent coincides with
the end of the monsoon rains in October (known
as the month Thidingyut in Burmese). The story
goes that Buddha came back to earth after a
3-month hiatus in heaven preaching to his mom.
The people of the world welcomed Buddha with
lights and lanterns, and in Burma, people still
observe this event with the Burmese Thidingyut
Festival. During the festival, pagodas, temples,
monasteries and homes in Burma are decorated
with lights and lanterns. But under the world¹s
most brutal military regime, the Burmese haven't
been able to celebrate this festival happily for
a long time in Burma. The Burmese Community
in Tokyo, however, will let loose with traditional
dances, live music, shops selling Burmese goods
and Burmese food stalls at HIBIYA CITY.
