Myanmar exported 233,616 cubic meters of teak in fiscal 1998-99 which ended
in March, 19.63 percent more than the previous fiscal year when 195,270
cubic meters were exported. According to the latest figures published by
the country's central statistical organization, the foreign exchange
earnings through the export amounted to 141 million U.S. dollars in
1998-99, 21.55 percent more than that obtained in the previous fiscal year.
During the fiscal year, Myanmar also exported 358,419 cubic meters of
hardwood, earning 34.98 million dollars. The export quantity and foreign
exchange earnings respectively increased by 64.58 percent and 36.37 percent
compared with the previous fiscal year. the figures of the myanmar ministry
of forestry indicate that the country's forest area is reducing year by
year. The percentage of coverage by forest in the country dropped to 50
percent at the end of 1998, falling by 7 percent compared with 36 years
ago. The cause of forest depletion was attributed to indiscriminate felling
and cutting of trees including firewood plantations for fuel and burning of
charcoal.

Myanmar has worked out projects for greening the arid districts under which
revival of firewood plantations is
among measures taken. The country also introduced firewood substitute fuel
such as briquette, micro-wave ovens and agricultural wastes in its effort
to prevent forest depletion and preserve the nation's forest and environment.
