THE courage of James Mawdsley and Rachel Goldwyn, both imprisoned in Burma
for campaigning for human rights, cannot be overstated (Father fears for
life of Burma protester, World News, last week).

The junta against which they chose to make their protests in person is one
that uses torture, rape, arbitrary detention and extrajudicial execution
with impunity.

As patrons of the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture, and
as former prisoners ourselves, we call upon the Burmese government to order
their immediate release, together with an estimated 1,200 long-term
political prisoners held in cruel, inhuman or degrading conditions.

In the interim, consular, legal and medical access should be permitted - the
last in the form of a Medical Foundation-affiliated doctor experienced in
examining and treating victims of torture.
