Combined cycle power plant (Ahlon) opened, will
generate 350m units of electricity a year
YANGON, 15 Sep-The combined cycle power plant Ahlon) of
Myanma Electric Power Enterprise of the Ministry of
Electric Power was commissioned into service this morning,
attended by Secretary- 1 of the State Peace and Development
Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. Speaking on the occasion
Minister Maj-Gen Tin Htut said the ministry is building
more natural-gas powered plants, hydel power plants and
combined cycle power plants to meet the nation's growing
power demand. Power consumption at present is 750
Triegawatts up over 200 per cent from 330 megawatts in
1988. Plans are being laid down to implement more power
projects as the official review shows rise in the power
consumption in the future.
With the permission of the government, the ministry reached
an agreement with Marubeni Corporation on 24 March 1997 to
extend installation of two combined cycle power plants, each
with 54-megawatt-capacity, one at Ahlon and another at
Hlawga, to fulfil the national energy needs; and the
combined cycle power plants do not need to burn extra- fuel
but generate power by recycling the waste heat from the
nearby gas-powered plants.
Due to the efforts of Myanmar engineers and staff and
Japanese and German engineers, building of the plant and
installation of machines was completed on 31 July 1999 three
months ahead of the target period of October 1999. Test run
of the plant was completed in August; and the plant started
to supply power to national power grid on 1 September 1999.
