Burma's military regime has warned dissidents would pay a high price if they
took part in protest action this week.

The AFP newsagency reports dissidents have called for a general strike,
civil disobedience and a boycott of state media on Thursday.

The planned action would fall on the date - the 9th of the 9th,'99 ........
and would mark a bloody uprising that took place on the 8th of the 8th,'88,
in which hundreds of people died.

Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Khin Maung Win says the Government would
take "appropriate and necessary action" against anyone disturbing law and
order.

He blames "subversive elements within and outside the country" for inciting
unrest in collusion with opposition movement leader Aung San Suu Kyi and her
party.
