MEDIA RELEASE

JOINT ACTION COMMITTEE FOR A DEMOCRATIC BURMA (SYDNEY) AUSTRALIA
5TH SEPTEMBER 1999

Eleven years ago, the Burmese people have shown their earnest desire for
democracy and human rights in Burma by staging a national popular uprising,
but
that people's desire was inhumanly and brutally crushed by the military
regime.
Thousands of people sacrificed their lives in a bloodbath for want of peace,
justice and equality. On the coming numerically significant 9.9.99, such a
national uprising against the military tyranny as in 1988 is very imminent
again in Burma. The Burmese patriots in Sydney will join their hands by
staging
a marching and protesting rally from Town Hall to the NSW Parliament House on
5.9.99 at 12:00 pm and by undertaking a prayer service for peace and democracy
in Burma in accordance with Buddhist, Christian and Islamic traditions on
6.9.99 at 6.00 p.m. at Hyde Park's Archibald Fountain (close to St. James
station).

U Tin Tut, the elected member of parliament (Ein Me Constituency) said, "At
the
present time, Burmese people have no democratic rights but rather only social
sufferings. At the same time a decline is in everywhere namely politics,
economy, education and social sector as well. Very grave crisis is deep rooted
in the nation. It is therefore urgently needed to change politically to
resolve
that crisis.By political change, I mean the convening of people's parliament.
Therefore convening of people's parliament is the key factor in resolution of
today's problems. To fulfil the national program, preliminary dialogue
between
NLD and SPDC should be started and directed finally to the tripartite
dialogue.
The positive, fair and benevolent mind bearing the interests of all
nationalities with the intention to solve the economic, social and education
problems is very important requirement at the dialogue table in between NLD
and
SPDC. There is no problem that can not be resolved if all participants have
good intentions for the country and learn the lessons from international
developments in the world. Ethnic Nationalities' Parties and other democracic
forces clamours for starting the dialogue as quickly as possible. Burmese
people, biting the bullets in social inequalities, have been expecting the New
Era of Democracy that will be born out of dialogue process. I urge through
this
marching and protesting rally to convene the parliament per 1990 election
results and start dialogue based on mutual respect and open mind as soon as
possible."

All democracy and peace loving people are warmly welcome to participate in
the above mentioned events.
