0901-01 Seminar On AFTA In Mandalay, Myanmar
**The Myanmar Institute of Strategic and International Studies held a
seminar concerning the AFTA (ASEAN Free Trade Area) process under the
sponsorship of Sasakawa Peace Foundation of Japan.  This was held in
Mandalay, capital city of upper Myanmar. The seminar started on 30th August.

Officials and intellectuals from Myanmar and Malaysia will discuss the
"General Overview Regional Perspective"," General Overview Myanmar
Perspective"," Some basic concepts of ASEAN economic cooperation ", "Basic
arrangements of ASEAN economic cooperation" and "Integration of Myanmar
into ASEAN" topics.

Minister for ASEAN Economic Affairs, officials from Sasakawa Peace
Foundation, and regional officials of Mandalay, intellectuals and
industrialist are attending the seminar.

0901-02 Teak And Hardwood Auctioned
**Myanmar Timber Enterprise sells teak and hard wood through tender on 30th
August in Yangon. Altogether 56 foreign owned companies bidded for the teak
and hardwood.

In Myanmar almost 1.5 million acres of teak forest can be found. Myanmar is
currently world's largest exporter of teak. Myanmar also have moderate
production of hardwood where the annual potential yield is 2.5 million
cubic meter.

The potential yields of teak and hardwood attracted investors from
countries like Singapore, China, Korea and Malaysia.

0901-03 Myanmar Joining Hong Kong Tourism Activities 
**As the tourism season sets in most of the Asian region, the tourism
activities takes it momentum. Top-level tourism officers left Yangon on
30th August for Hong Kong.

The delegation will attend the "Discover USA" seminar on 31st August and
visit the "International Tourism Asia" exhibition from 1st to 3rd
September, during their stay in Hong Kong.

Myanmar tourism season is from September-May. Myanmar just last week hosted
the ASEAN National Tourism Organization gathering in Yangon.

0901-04 German Company Discusses Investment in Myanmar
**Mr. Kurt Nass of Southeast Asia Commercial & Industrial Consulting of
Germany discussed investment matters with the Secretary of Myanma
Investment Commission.
The Myanma Investment Commission is the body responsible for granting the
foreign businesses to establish their business in Myanmar.

German businesses like Deutsche Bank have their representative offices in
Yangon. Another German garment company Myanmar Triumph International has
its garment and marketing business in Myanmar.  

0901-05 Trade Training in Manila Attended by Myanmar
**An official of Union of Myanmar Federation of Commerce and Industry
(UMFCCI) is attending the trainers' training on trade promotion, in Manila,
Philippines.

Attendees comprise of the newcomers to the ASEAN bloc: Cambodia, Laos,
Myanmar, and Vietnam.  The attendees to the 5 -day training are trade
promotion personnel from the government and business sectors.
