0830-01 A Promising Millenium for ASEAN Tourism
**ASEAN tourism projects were lined up at the conclusion of the 10th
National Tourism meeting held in Yangon recently. Key projects were also
highlighted encouraging the active participation of the ASEAN member
countries.

Kick off activities will start on 21-22 January Year 2000 for the ASEAN
Millenium year 2002 (VAY 2002). This will be held in Bangkok where they
will also be holding concurrently an ASEAN Tourist Fair. VAY 2002 will be
officially launched in at the 2001 ASEAN Tourism Fair to be held in this
time in Brunei. The Year 2001 was also designated Visit Brunei Year.

Visit Asean Millenium Year(VAY) 2002 is expected to bring about aviation
linkage of ASEAN destinations, development of airports, cross-border
facilities among others.

Another tourism promotion is the ASEAN Lane that is designed to promote
intra-ASEAN travel. This will facilitate for easier travel of the
international traveler to the ASEAN countries. However, as of yet, the new
comers Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia still require visas for entry to
their states. The ASEAN Lane policies should be completed before VAY 2002
as they see it an integral part of making the VAY 2002 a solid success.

10th ASEAN NTO (National Tourism Organization) meeting adopted the plans
for the staging of ASEAN Tourism Investment Road Shows and development of
an ASEAN Tourism Investment Website. The meeting endorsed the plans for a
2-days meeting in Singapore, which will be the first ASEAN Cruise Working
Group Meeting .The work plan for this group will involve conducting of a
survey to access the cruise market potential for ASEAN.

For the first time, 10 ASEAN member countries will participate collectively
in Kangwon-do International Travel Exposition (Korea). It will be the first
combined ASEAN participation in a marketing event overseas.

The ASEAN Communication Team for Tourism (ACTT) will continue to play an
active role in disseminating relevant information on events effecting the
tourism travel and tourism in the region.

0830-02 ? And More International Events for Yangon to Host
**The 65th ASEAN Federation of Accountants AFA meeting and the 17th meeting
of the Health Ministers of Southeast Asian countries will hosted by Myanmar.

Myanmar hosted several ASEAN gatherings this year, most recently 10th ASEAN
NTO(National Tourism Organization)meeting, ASEAN Chamber of Commerce
Meeting and Ministerial Meeting of Labor Ministers of ASEAN members.

0830-03 Add Agriculture, Construction Equipment for Myanmar- Daewoo
**Daewoo Construction and Mercenaries Company Limited on 27 August held
coordination meeting with the Myanmar Construction Entrepreneurs
Association in Yangon.

According to the company's officials plans are underway to inject more
machinery for Myanmar's construction and agriculture sectors. The country's
agriculture sector is rapidly increasing and thus additional need for heavy
machinery. Daewoo Machinery has opened a machinery rental service in Yangon
since April 1997.

Daewoo have various business undertakings in Myanmar as 1) general trading
(petroleum products, supermarket), 2) plywood manufacturing, 3) consumer
electronic goods assembling plant, PC Board assembly, soldering then ship
back to Korea too, 4) Daewoo motor vehicle sales and future plans are
underway for motor vehicle assembly, 5) the biggest activity is garment
factory in collaboration with Myanma Economic holding limited, their
biggest market is USA.

0830-04 Myanmar's Trade Extends to Central Asia
**Myanmar and the former Soviet Republic of Turkmenistan established
diplomatic relations at the Ambassadorial level starting from 26th August,
a press communique released by Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.

Turkmenistan, a central Asia republic of former Soviet Union is famous for
its cotton and cotton made products.

Myanmar has recently established diplomatic relations with other two
countries in the central Asia, Azerbaijan and Georgia.

0830-05 Inland Sea Prawns Breeding In Myanmar
The Minister for Livestock and Fisheries, Maung Maung Thein along with the
members of Myanmar Fisheries Association visited the breeding station of
united Fishery Enterprise Co Ltd. The site is an inland breeding station,
about 20 minutes drive from the Yangon City center.

The breeding of prawns began in May 1999 with 140,000 prawns in one acre.
Two tons of prawn can be produced after every four months.

0830-06 Singtel & Malaysia's Integrated Information To Publish Myanmar
Directory
The Myanmar Federation of Commerce and Industries is coordinating for the
publication of 2000 Myanmar Business Directory & Business Guide soon.

Singtel Yellow Pages of Singapore and Integrated Information of Malaysia
will undertake the publication of the book. Year 2000 publication will be
consistent with the international norms.
