India To Import 97,000 Tonnes Of Pulses
NEW DELHI, Aug 30 Asia Pulse - India has contracted 97,000 tonnes of pulses
for import from Myanmar, Australia and other countries to bridge supply
shortage and keep prices in check.
The country will import pulses from Myanmar and Dung peas from Australia,
according to the government of India statement.

Since all the imports, except the first lot of 25,000 tonnes pulses from
Myanmar, are routed through Singapore, it was difficult to give a break-up
of the source from which the pulses are coming, sources said.

The first lot is expected to arrive any time now and the last shipment was
expected to be in in two months' time.

>From Australia, 46,000 tonnes of Dung peas, which is popular in South India,
would be imported.

The cabinet committee on prices in June had decided to allow the National
Cooperative Agriculture Marketing Federation (NAFED) to canalise pulses
import under government account to keep rising domestic pulses prices under
check.

Import from Myanmar was on a government-to-government basis with Myanmar
Agriculture Services and State Trading Corporation being the two agencies
authorised to trade, they said.

India's pulses production during 1998-99 increased to 15.5 million tonnes
from 13 million tonnes the previous year. In order to check the domestic
prices, pulses import had been allowed under open general license since last
year.

Last year, India imported around 500,000 tonnes of pulses, mainly through
private traders, sources said. adding pulses imports was low last year as
the global prices were higher.

On an average, India imports 800,000-900,000 tonnes of pulses every year.
