Vancouver Hunger Strkers Prepare

HUNGER STRIKERS PREPARE FOR LONG WEEKEND IN BC
BurmaNews - BC: August 27, 1999

VANCOUVER -- Burmese activists are preparing for the long Labour Day
weekend by setting up a hunger strike on the front steps of a downtown
Vancouver church. The event is organized by groups participating in the
Vancouver Burma Roundtable to show solidarity with the people of Burma at a
critical time in the struggle for democracy and human rights in their
homeland.

Kyi Min, a group organizer, said that the fasters would have nine people on
the steps of the church at the corner of Burrard and Nelson from 9 to 9
starting September 3rd to September 6th, in keeping with the worldwide
9-9-99 observance by groups both inside and outside Burma. Other
supporters are expected to provide information to passers-by about the
strikers' position on events in Burma.

The hunger-strike will climax with an outdoor rally to be held at Grandview
Park on Commercial Drive on Labour Day, the first Monday in September. The
rally will include speakers and presentations by the city's popular Burma
Band and singers.
