Media Report
9999 Action Committee (Australia) Hunger Strike Held.
A nine-day hunger strike, organized and participated by the Burmese
students, patriotic Burmese nationals and other democratic elements, has
commenced on August 20, 1999, with a first day opening ceremony in front of
the New South Wales Parliament in Sydney. The hunger strike demonstration
successfully started at 6:30 A.M. with nine participants holding photos of
the massacres in 1988 in Burma. At 5:30 P.M. the demonstration ended
successfully cheered and well wished by all passersby and especially by
members and staff of the New South Wales Parliament. A 9-day dawn to dusk
demonstration will continue, with nine demonstrators participating daily,
excepting weekend holidays.
The Greens Party, the Democrat Party, and Labor Party members gave their
words of support and interest and endorsed the demands made by the 9999
Action Committee, by putting their signatures on the Petition Pad. The
President of the Legislative Council, Ms. Meredith Burgmann, herself has
added her signature in heartfelt support of the demonstration in addition to
an offer of services as required for the success of the demonstrations.
There were more than 200 signatures given in support of Burma?s democracy
and 1500 leaflets and 9999 pin badges distributed on the first day.
The 9999 Action Committee has deemed this as the most crucial period for
convening the people?s parliament and endeavoring for Burma?s democracy and
human rights. The Committee also believed that every Burmese national has an
obligation to cooperate and participate at his/her best in the movement for
the motherland (Burma?s) democracy in order to achieve the 9999 objective.
The Committee will strive for added impetus till to its ultimate crescendo
on September 9, 1999, when a mammoth demonstration "Free Burma 9999 Global
Day of Action" will be held in Canberra. Also, the Committee will continue
to work in concert and equilibrium with the people and the students of Burma
and the international community, to get support and recognition for the
Committee Representing People?s Parliament which came into existence on
September 16, 1998, the 9999 Action Committee?s ultimate objective.
The Committee has a pressing agenda in the form of a "Free Burma 9999 Forum"
in the Theatrette Hall of the New South Wales Parliament House at 5:00 P.M.,
a sit-in ?Tent City? demonstration in front of the SPDC embassy in Canberra
commencing on September 8, 1999 and the ultimate "Free Burma 9999 Global Day
of Action" on September 9, 1999. The National Union of Students (Australia),
workers unions, and democracy desiring people will also cooperate and
participate in the demonstrations.
