             Burma arrests thirty for
             unrest "conspiracy"

The Burmese military government says it has arrested
thirty-two people recently in connection with a
conspiracy to cause unrest in September.

A senior intelligence official, Colonel Than Tun, told a
news conference in Rangoon that twenty-five people
were held in the central town of Pegu, six in Ye and one
in Moulmein in the south. The arrests are in addition to
four people the government said had been held last
week. Than Tun said some of those arrested were
members of the opposition National League for
             Democracy.

Others had links with dissident groups in exile, which
have called for a general strike on the ninth of September
1999, the so-called "day of the four nines".
