Subject: Resolution to exclude Burma from the Olympic Games
Dear Amanda Zappia
I refer to your letter of 9 July 1999 and advise that the Tasmanian Trades
and Labor Council adopted the resolution suggested by the Federation of
Trade Unions - Burma, which amongst other things, 'calls on the Australian
Government: (1) to give legal and political support to CRPP and (2) close
the Austrade Office in Rangoon and discourage trade with the dictatorship
until political and economic reforms have been implemented, including
political dialogue, release of all political prisoners, adherence to the
recommendations of the ILO and the UN, adherence to recommendations made by
the IMF and adherence to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to which
Burma becam a signatory in 1955, and calls on the IOC to (1) exclude Burma
from the Olympic Games unless there is substantial political and economic
reforms in the country and (2) ensures that should Burma participate in the
games, all citizens of the country are given equal opportunity of race,
religion or political beliefs.'
Yours in solidarity
