BANGKOK, Aug 16 (Reuters) - A earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale
jolted Shan state in northeastern Myanmar but no damage or casualties were
reported, an official of Thailand's earthquake monitoring centre said on
Monday.

The quake, which could be felt in northern Thailand, occurred at 11:19 p.m.
(1619 GMT) on Sunday. Its epicentre was in a jungle area in Myanmar about
254 km (154 miles) southwest of Chiang Mai, said an official at the
earthquake monitoring centre in that northern Thai city.

``People living in Chiang Mai felt the jolting,'' he said.

The official said the jungle area where the quake struck is sparsely
populated and there had been no reports of damage of casualties.

An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the open-ended Richter scale is capable of
causing heavy damage in a populated area.

Rural areas of Shan State are periodically hit by earthquakes, but they
rarely cause damage.

On July 15, a quake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale jolted an area of
Shan State about 337 miles (540 km) northeast of the Myanmar capital Yangon,
but no damage was reported.
