Honorary NZ doctorate for Aung San Suu Kyi

Wellington: New Zealand's Victoria University said Wednesday it would award
an honorary doctorate to Burma pro-democracy opposition leader Aung San Suu
Kyi.

In a statement, the university said it would be bestowed as part of its
centennial celebrations. However, it added that Aung San Suu Kyi would be
"unable to accept the honorary doctor of laws degree in person because of
political repression in her home country." The Nobel laureate remains under
military surveillance. (AFP)
