(1) Opening Ceremony of Breastfeeding Counselling Course Held
Breastfeeding Counselling Group opened a course to mark World
Breastfeeding Week at Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association (MMCWA)
Headquarters in Yangon on 7 August under the sponsorship of MMCWA and UNICEF.
Regarding the health sector the government is implementing national health
plans in connection with the motto "Health for All by the Year 2000", and
while making endeavours for economic and social development of the future
state, it is also implementing disease control tasks, health promotion
programmes and treatment and health rehabilitation work, considering the
crucial role of the health of women and children. In doing so, national
policies on breastfeeding have been laid down so that health care centres can
organize women and children to follow. Breastfeeding Hospital Initiative
project is being implemented at hospitals throughout the country. Moreover,
mothers who give births at home are being educated about systematic
breastfeeding. MMCWA has celebrated Breastfeeding Week with activities since
1994. The association is educating mothers who attended development centres
for children throughout the countries about what breastfeeding is the best
for babies. Students at high and middle schools are given health knowledge
about breastfeeding and lectures on breastfeeding are given at vocational
training courses and 3-R courses opened by the association. In the first week
of August every year, Breastfeeding Week activities are held at different
levels of MMCWA.
(2) SEA Games Federation Council Meets
Member of 20th South East Asia (SEA) Games Federation Council,
Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee, Minister for Sports attended SEA Games
Federation Council Meeting held in Brunei Darussalem on 5 August. Also
present at the meeting were Chairman of 20th SEA Games Federation Prince Haji
Sufri Bolkiah, council members of ASEAN countries, members of Leading
Committee for Holding the 20th SEA Games and officials. Chairman Prince Haji
Sufri Bolkiah extended greetings. Minutes of 20th SEA Games Federation
Council Meeting held in May, 1998 was approved. Later, report on progress of
work of Leading Committee for Holding the 20th SEA Games was submitted,
followed by a general round of discussions. The meeting approved the plan to
hold the 21st SEA Games in Malaysia in 2001.
(3) Nationalities in Pinlaung Township Get Adequate Drinking Water Supply
Pa-O, Taungyoe, Shan and Danu nationals on 5 August celebrated the
successful efforts for drinking water supply from springs and streams to
their Hsekhaung Village in Pinlaung Township, TaungGyi District, Eastern Shan
State. Pipes stretching 55,235 feet were laid from the Naungtaw Spring in
Tikyit Village-tract to two big reservoirs and 49 drinking water supply
stations to distribute clean drinking water to villages. The project
expenditure was set up by the UNICEF fund and over K 2.7 million by Water
Resources Utilization Department. Regional people contributed K 1.3 million.
(4) Outstanding School Boy Back from Japan
The third standard school boy Maung Thura Aung of Basic Education
High School No. 1 in Dagon Township and his mother arrived back Yangon by air
from Japan on 6 August after receiving the outstanding award at the prize
presentation ceremony of Asia Children's Painting Competition held in
Yokohama, Japan, on 4 August.
(5) Official Leaves for Israel
Assistant Director U Aung Htay Win of Labour Department of the
Ministry of Labour left Yangon by air for Israel, on 7 August to attend
International Course on Financial and Organizational Management Through
Computer Usage for Trade Unions to be conducted from 8 August to 7 September
in Tel Aviv, Israel.
