The Foreign Affairs Committee of=A0 All Burma Federation of Student Unions
(ABFSU-FAC) would like to express its gratitude to Human Rights Watch, a human
rights organisation based in the United States, for awarding the 1999 Hellmann
Hemmett Prize to Ko Aung Htun from the ABFSU.
The prize that is being presented to Ko Aung Htun is an encouragement for all
students in Burma who are struggling for democracy and human rights. The
ABFSU-FAC strongly believes that this award is a proud recognition by the
international community of the efforts and sacrifices of the students of Burma
to reach democracy and peace in their home country. We also believe that this
award is a manifestation of the international support for those fighting for
democracy and peace in authoritarian states.=A0
Ko Aung Htun is a leading member of the ABFSU and a student at the Rangoon
Institute of Technology. He was arrested for the first time on September 1st,
1990, and sentenced to 5 years imprisonment. In 1994, he was released from
Tharawaddy Prison. Then, he started collecting material and compiling
information for a book about the 88 years of history of the student
movement in
Burma. In February 1998, he was arrested because of his involvement in the
production and distribution of this book, and sentenced to 15 years
imprisonment because of his political believes.
The ABFSU would like to honour Ko Aung Htun and those colleagues who are
carrying out the struggle for a better future that is being waged daily inside
Burma, and vows to continue its struggle for democracy and peace in Burma,
with
the support of the students of Burma and the international community.
