August 8th weekend activities commemorate 1988 massacre in Burma
Washington, DC, July 14, 1999: Free Burma activists, Burmese students,
politicians, and individuals from human rights organizations will gather in
Washington, DC on the weekend of August 8, 1999 to commemorate the eleventh
anniversary of the August 8th massacre in Burma. Eleven years ago, on
August 8th, or 8.8.88, the Burmese military regime murdered over 4,000
people participating in nationwide pro-democracy demonstrations referred to
as the 1988 Uprising.
An award ceremony and screening of the historic film, Birth: Voices from the
1988 Uprising in Burma, will kick off the weekend events on August 6th at
6:30 PM in the office building of the National Coalition Government Union of
Burma (NCGUB), 815 15th Street, NW, 10th Floor Conference Room, in
Washington, DC. Birth: Voices from the 1988 Uprising in Burma, a
documentary recounting the events of the uprising, recently won the
International Video Award in the 1999 Hometown Video Festival, a nationwide
competition sponsored by the Alliance for Community Media. Part of the
historical record of Burma, Birth is the first documentary which tells the
true story of the uprising as well as being the first film on the democracy
movement produced by a Burmese activist. During the August 6th ceremony,
Shwe Htee (8.8.88), the Executive Producer of the film, will donate his
International Video Award to Dr. Sein Win, the Honorable Prime Minister of
the National Coalition Government Union of Burma (NCGUB). Dr. Sein Win and
the members of the NCGUB were elected as a result of the 1990 elections,
which the regime still refuses to recognize. Shwe Htee says, "I want to
share my award because it actually represents a collective effort of many
Burmese students and Free Burma activists. We made this film so people will
never forget the thousands of innocent victims who sacrificed their lives
for democracy and humans rights in Burma."
Other activities planned for the August 8th weekend include a candlelight
vigil and wreath laying ceremony on August 7th from 8-9 PM in front of the
Burmese Ambassador's residence, 2333 R Street, NW, Washington, DC, and a
memorial service on the morning of the August 8th at the Burmese monastery,
1708 Powder Mill Road, Silver Spring, MD. Both of these events are
sponsored by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) in Washington, DC. The August
6th award ceremony and screening is sponsored by the Nonviolence Empowerment
Organization, Inc. (NEO).
The Nonviolence Empowerment Organization, Inc. (NEO) is an organization
dedicated to educating the public about the situation of human rights and
