Thailand allows Burmese workers to stay

The Thai government has decided to allow about ninety-thousand registered
migrant workers -- mainly from Burma -- to remain in the country for another
year.

A Labour Ministry spokesman told the BBC that the government believed it was
impossible to expel migrant workers, and wanted them to report to the
authorities voluntarily.

But critics say the decision will effectively enable Thailand to maintain a
supply of cheap labour, because most of the migrant workers are paid less
than the minimum wage.
