Six high school students arrested for distributing pamphlets in Rangoon

Six high school students from Daw Bon and Thar Kay Ta Township of Rangoon Were
arrested by local authorities at night on 27 August. They were arrested for
Their involvement in a students meeting and for distributing pamphlets on the
street to passers-by. The list of arrested students is as follows.

1. Myat Thu, Daw Bon Township
2. Htun Htun, Daw Bon Township
3. Kyaw Htay, Daw Bon Township
4. Myat Thu Nyi, 10th standard, BEHS (1), Daw Bon Township
5. Unknown student from BEHS (1) Thar Kay Ta Township and
6. Unknown student from BEHS (1) Thar Kay Ta Township.

Meanwhile sources inside Burma have informed us of the sporadic actions of
pro-democratic activists inside Rangoon. Pamphlets were distributed throughout
the city and stickers and posters have been found in several public places. On
the morning of 29 August, several leaflets were distributed by students inside
the Pazun Daung market. The leaflets call on people to join in the upcoming
9-9-99 mass movement to end the military dictatorship in Burma.

Security at high schools in Rangoon has been tightened after consecutive
student protests in Tamwe high schools. Teachers have been assigned duties to
guard students, to check for pro-democratic posters and graffiti in school
restrooms. The teachers have also been instructed to protect the military
regime's propaganda signboards, which are found in every school compound. The
regime fears that the students will attack these military signboards with
stones and paint.

?Our students from 9th and 10th standards have to leave through the front gate
while the other students from 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th standards have to go back
through the back gate. The students feel annoyed because of the presence of
the
UDSA people and police standing visibly around the compound when the school
finishes,? a high school student from Tamwe Basic Education High School (2)
said.

Recently students were informed that they would not have to come to
schools as
they were given at least two weeks holiday without any notice or explanation.
This holiday starts at the beginning of next month. This unscheduled holiday
includes all students from primary school level through to post-graduates.
