Burma and US clash at Asia-Pacific talks
---------------------------------------------------------
(Radio Australia- 27 July 1999)
Burma and the United States have clashed at the Asia Pacific talks in
Singapore.
Graeme Dobell reports, America used the conference of 20-foreign ministers
to criticise Burma's repression:
The U-S Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright says America is disappointed
by the continued failure of Burma's authorities to open a meaningful
dialogue with the democratic opposition. Doctor Albright says repression in
Burma has generated economic disaster while democracy will help prosperity.
Burma's foreign minister Win Aung replied that the U-S was using the
dialogue to interfer in Burma's internal affairs. He says Burma as a member
of ASEAN wants respect for the principles of non-interference and mutual
respect.
