Malaysian Team On Trade Visit To 4 Asean Countries
KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 Asia Pulse - The Ministry of International Trade and
Industry (MITI) and delegates led by MITI's Parliamentary Secretary, Ahmad
Kamaruzaman Mohamed Baria will be on a trade and investment mission to four
Asean neighbours, namely Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia from July 25 to
Aug 3.
MITI said in a statement on Friday that the delegation comprised officials,
77 private sector members representing 58 companies from both the
manufacturing and services sector.

The mission is aimed at seeking investment and business opportunities in the
four Asean countries in the field of agro-industry, housing and
construction, power transmission, telecommunications, electrical products
facility, lighting, logging and tourism industry.

MITI said that the mission will enable the representatives of Malaysian
companies to meet and discuss individually with their Asean counterparts for
possibilities of joint business collaborations.

The delegation will also update and brief the business communities in the
four Asean countries on the economic situation in Malaysia and the policy as
well as measures taken by the Malaysian government to address the economic
crisis, MITI said.

Overall, the mission will expand bilateral trade relations with Myanmar,
Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia, promoting exports of Malaysian manufactured
products and assist in the identification of sources of imports for local
requirements.

In 1998, bilateral trade with Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam stood at
RM1.369 billion (US$360.5 million) RM6.8 million, RM196.9 million and
RM2.008 billion, respectively.

Ahmad Kamaruzaman is expected to call on the Minister in the Office of
State, Peace and Development in Myanmar, the Minister of Planning and
Investment and the chairman of the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City in
Vietnam as well as the Vice-Minister to Prime Ministers Office in charge of
foreign investments in Laos.

He will also have bilateral discussions with Industry, Trade and Commerce
Ministers and Vice-Ministers of all four countries.
