Foreign Affairs' Family and Friends

INCREASINGLY, VACANCIES IN MYANMAR'S foreign ministry are being filled
by relatives of the military elite. Three of the
daughters of the ruling regime's leader, Senior Gen. Than Shwe, now work
at the foreign ministry and one will soon be
posted as a diplomat to Geneva - though she has little training for the
job. Secretary-2, Lt.-Gen. Tin Oo, also has a son at
the ministry, as do other high-ranking officers. And several military
men themselves were recently parachuted directly into
senior posts in the ministry bureaucracy, causing career diplomats to
lament their receding chances of promotion. It makes
sense - Foreign Minister Win Aung, appointed last November, is a former
military man. And as the father of three children he
will have an opportunity to give his kids a professional helping hand
when the time comes.
