Martyrs' Day Statement by FMASA

Statement on 92nd Anniversary of Martyrs' Day
Date: 19th July 1999

1 Burma, where various ethnic groups resids, has been the independent
kingdom for many era of the history. After the three consecutive
aggressions by the British invaders -- 1824-26, 1852-54 and 1885 --, Burma
lost her independence.
2. Since then, the patriots of Burma had started their liberation movement
against the British colonist. Starting from the year 1920, students
spearheaded the organized anti-colonial movements that brought the British
considering the independence of Burma. In 1930, Do-ba-ma Asi-ayone (We-the
Burmese), a political party, was established for the independence of Burma.
The youth members of that organization, incooperation with the student
leaders, prepared to take up arms against the British Colonists.
Eventually, Burma Independence Army (BIA), led by General Aung San and his
thirty comrades, drove the British out of Burma with the assistance of
Japanese.
3. Although BIA uplifted the British colonial rule, the nation suffered the
atrocities under the Japanese fascist rule. After the Japanese were driven
out of Burma, General Aung San, national hero of Burma, took the leading
role in the formation of Anti-fascist People Freedom League (AFPFL) for the
prospect of independence. By that time, British colonist invaded and rule
the nation again. This time, they practiced the "White Paper Plan", that is
divide and rule between the main land and mountainous regions. Their
intention was to leave the mountainous part of Burma when Burma would be the
independent country.
4. During the elections in 1947, AFPFL led by General Aung San won with
landslide victory. The then cabinet led by General Aung San drafted the
constitution of Burma accordance with the democratic practise. On 24th
September 1947, the drafted constitution was approved by the People's
Parliament. Before General Aung San and his colleagues saw the fruits of
their endeavours, they were assassinated by a group of terrorists on 19th
July 1947. That day, the 19th of July, was the most sorrowful day of
Burmese history and became the Martyrs' Day of Burma.
5. Because of the loss of nation's independent hero General Aung San and
the leaders, the people of Burma not only mourned for them but also lost the
democratic rights, that is, freedom of politics, religion, economy and the

equality by the law. Moreover, the unity among the ethnic people of Burma
was greatly affected and several-decade-long civil war started to rage soon
after the independence of Burma.
6. General Aung San, Burma's independent architect, national leader and
father of Army, and his colleagues had not seen Burma gaining her
independence. Although Burma regained her independence in 1948, the reality
of independent Burma disappeared with the martyrs and the people of Burma
have been sufferring from hardships under the gun-point-rule of the military
dictators. Therefore, we, Former Members' Association of Student Army
(FMASA), in unity with the people of Burma, sustain our struggles for
Democracy and Human Rights in Burma that General Aung San and the patriotic
leaders of Burma sacrificed for .
