Earthquake rocks northeastern Myanmar

YANGON, July 16 (Reuters) - An earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale
jolted northeastern Shan state in Myanmar on Thursday, a meteorological
official said.

No damage had yet been reported from the quake which occurred at 0939 GMT on
Thursday and rattled a sparsely populated area, he told Reuters on Friday.

``An earthquake of intensity 5.2 on the Richter scale with its epicentre
about 337 miles (540 kilometres) north-east of Kaba-Aye seismological
observatory in Yangon was recorded on Thursday,'' the Myanma News Agency
(MNA) reported.

An official at Yangon Meteorology and Hydrology Department said: ``The
epicentre of the earthquake was somewhere near Kengtung, a city in the
south-eastern part of Shan State.''

``No damage has been reported so far. We think the exact epicentre may be in
a very sparsely populated area,'' he said.
