Government Of Myanmar Calls For?A Pragmatic And Meaningful Cooperation? From
National League For Democracy

The Government wishes the NLD to act in a more pragmatic and
sensible way so that a positive and a meaningful interaction can be resumed
without any interruption again. The government believes that the process
could be managed with the NLD?s retraction of the committee which it says
will act as an interim parliament upon which the government views with great
concern that this movement designed by NLD would not lead to a stable
democracy, but to institutional confusion, social chaos and genuine political
crisis.

The Government wishes and hopes that the NLD takes a serious
consideration into the above-mentioned factors and contribute in a
responsible and constructive manner to achieving our common goals: a thriving
economy, and a stable, multiparty democratic system.

But the Government feels that it is unfortunate because the
NLD is coming up with only the symbolic gestures designed merely to attract
attention. For example, the situation at present is like so much, so that the
NLD in saying they want to see the wheel revolving instead of being inactive
but at the same time refusing to take back the spokes they have put in the
wheel that is causing the jam.

The Government is pleased to mention that since September
1998 it has been involved in the process of exchanging views with a number of
NLD members who are staying at various Government guest houses upon the
Government?s invitation. Almost all of the NLD members have returned home
after a successful exchange of views to build a stable, multiparty democracy
and to preserve the prevailing peace that Myanmar enjoys.

The Government is still in the process of continuing its
exchange of views with the remaining 55 members on the week-days after their
return to the guest houses from their week-end and holiday home visits.

The Government is also pleased to have been able to arrange
for the International Red Cross (ICRC) members in paying a visit and meeting
with the NLD members at the guest houses recently.
