Police Rob People in Muse:

14 July 1999

Police Rob People in Muse

S.H.A.N. source in the north reported yesterday that traffic in a border town
were held up by the police in order to sell tickets for a fashion show.

On the evening of 7 July, motorcycles and cars in Muse, the border town with
China, were stopped by the local police who forcefully sold the occupants one
ticket each for a fashion show organized by the local authorities. "We
heard it
was a colonel from Mong Ko who contracted this team of famous models from
Rangoon and Mandalay", said one local citizen.

The tickets were sold at three prices: K. 1,000, K. 1,500 and K. 2,000. "For
those who refused to buy, the police just took away the ignition keys until
the
drivers complied with their condition".

The tickets were for the evenings of 9 July and 11 July at the town stadium.

"They had done the same thing last year during the Shan New Year. Vehicles
that
were heading for the Shan festival ground and not to the stadium where a
traveling Burmese dramatic troupe was performing were held up and demanded to
pay K. 500 each", said the source. "They cleared about K. 300,000 then".
