(1) Development of Kayin State Inspected
Chairman of Work Committee for Development of Border Areas
and National Races, Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council
Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt arrived at Hpa-an, Kayin State, on 10 July morning to
inspect the development of Kayin State. In Zwekabin Hall, Hpa-an. The
Secretary-1met with members of Kayin State, District and Township Peace and
Development Councils, departmental personnel and members of social
organizations and delivered an address on the occasion. In his address,
Secretary-1 said; "Today, people are enjoying the fruits of peace and
stability prevailing all over the country, and as there is peace in Kayin
State, the region is also having good progress. There have been 17 armed
groups that returned to the legal fold after realizing the government's warm
welcome, and today, there is no armed group in existence except KNU(Kayin
National Union). The government, always welcomes KNU to return to the legal
fold like other national brethren groups and seriously recognizes the KNU's
efforts trying to make peace with the government. The KNU ignored the
government's offer to organize talks to make peace and it continued to
received millions of dollars and redistributed the financial assistance to
the anti-government groups. Peace and stability has been restored in Kayin
State due to the armed groups' returning to the legal fold after realizing
genuine goodwill of the government and disorder of KNU Headquarters and the
government is effectively endeavouring for regional development and raising
of quality of life of the people. Construction of 20-mile tarred road
including gravel and earth roads, construction of 22 medium bridges and 2
major bridges, opening of hospitals, dispensaries, primary and middle
schools, installation of generators and opening of TV relay stations for
development of Kayin State under arrangement of the Work Committee for
Development of Border Areas and National Races can be seen vividly as an
evidence. A total of K 928.85 million has been spent on education, health,
agriculture and transport. Kawtkyaik-Kawtparan road and 57-mile
Thanbyuzayat-Phayathonzu road were also constructed. Three bridges namely,
Thanlwin(Hpa-an), Zathabyin, Kawkareik were built at a cost of US $ 9.823
million and K 1,726.66 million. Because of KNU which is outside the law the
region is not fully peaceful yet. The government is making efforts for
regional development with genuine goodwill."
Afterward, the Secretary-1 and party went to Phayagon New
Village of Peace in Hpa-an Township where they met with (former KNU members)
Phado Aung San and party who exchanged arms for peace and U Saw Tha Mu He and
members and fufilled the requirements for agriculture needs.
(2) Secretary-2 Receives Vietnamese Delegation
Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen
Tin Oo received a museum study delegation led by Sr. Col Lee Ma Luong of
Vietnamese Army who called at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence on 10
July.
(3) Minister to Visit Sri Lanka, Bangladesh
At the invitation of Mr. Lakshman Kadirgamar, Minister for
Foreign Affairs of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, Minister
for Foreign Affairs of the Union of Myanmar will pay a goodwill visit to the
Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka from 14 to 16 July 1999. He will
also pay a goodwill visit to the People's Republic of Bangladesh at the
invitation of Mr. Abdus Samad Azad, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the
People's Republic of Bangladesh, from 17 to 19 July 1999.
(4) Five-Storey Hostel Opened at Yangon Education Centre for the
Blind
The inauguration ceremony of a five-story hostel of Yangon
Education Centre for the Blind (Khaweigyan) was held at the new hostel on 10
July. It was built at a cost of over K 43 million. Minister for Social
Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, Ambassador of Japan and General Secretary
of Myanmar Christian Fellowship of the Blind formally opened the hostel in
Yangon.
(5) President of Asian Badminton Confederation ans More Athletes
Arrive
President of Asian Badminton Confederation, Deputy Prime
Minister of Thailand Mr. Korn Dabbarnnsi and party arrived Yangon by air on
10 July morning to watch the Golden Eagle Asian Juniors Badminton
Championship 1999 to be hosted in Yangon. Similarly, athletes from Thailand,
India, Maldives, Cambodia, Sri Lanka and Chinese-Taipei badminton teams on
10 July arrived Yangon to take part in the Golden Eagle Asian Juniors
Badminton Championship 1999 to be held in the National Indoor Stadium-1 in
Thuwunna from 11 to 17 July. A total of 57 players--18 from Thailand team, 12
from Sri Lanka, 10 from India, 8 from Maldives, 6 from Cambodia and 3 from
Chinese Taibei--arrived in Yangon.
(6) Officials Leaves for Singapore
Member of the Civil Service Selection and Training Board, U
Hla Myint Oo and Deputy Director-General of General Administration
Department of Ministry of Home Afairs left Yangon by air on 10 July afternoon
to attend the Conference on Public Leadership to be held in Singapore.
